The Blue Herons – Sleepy Town

It never ceases to amaze me when people seek to give their talent a sense of ambition, a goal that makes it a tree reaching skywards. It happens – quite often, in fact – but few possess the consistency and quality needed to instil the certainty that, whenever you find yourself in those parts, you breathe in the beauty that nourishes the mind and transforms the place into a magical realm…
Following the album *Demon Slayer* (which I also reviewed), this upcoming track seems to be yet another gesture to envelop our memories, to whet our appetite, and to give our joy the desire to see everything that came before perpetuated.

The track explores the many transformations of the Swiss-American duo, like a breath of fresh air that captivates the listener: the rhythm and celestial spirit, conveyed through Andy Jossi’s incredibly skilfully crafted jangle pop, combined with Gretchen DeVault’s velvety narrative—rich with imagery that bridges imagination and dreams—create a truly striking effect, as if these notes were stripping away the darkness and revealing to us the other side of existence that we do not inhabit. The work on the backing vocals, the dynamics, and the guitars that support and intertwine with one another is remarkable, extending the magnetism already familiar to all of us who know the band.
Here we find something more: a maturity that leads us towards the exploration of compositional techniques which broaden the boundaries, a tentative foray into musical genres that offer a support – one that is merely there to be seen, but upon which the duo does not rely: they know full well how to rely solely on their own work, and what reaches us is a gem that races along; it doesn’t invite you to watch it, but rather makes you want to dance, to be out of breath, to sweat, whilst the dreamlike element, incredibly, offers us the chance to experience it consciously. And this is the true wonder of this enchanting single…

The verse, the chorus, the shift in atmosphere and structure, and the finale here are like a cushion nestled amidst a hill, a unified whole that draws you in and shifts the way you listen: one is left with a sense of joy, of new possibilities, of a break from sad anxiety, and all the elements of the lyrics by the talented American singer are precisely the rhythms that guide Andy’s instruments, creating a rainbow in which to lose oneself without restraint or fear.
Distant worlds (like the couple at the heart of the lyrics) seem, through an invocation of presence, to drift through these marvellous musical descents, making a new connection possible, allowing the stars to be not merely spectators of sorrow but rather of a long-desired joy!
One learns so many precious things in these few minutes: one gains a different awareness, a tireless need not to abandon it, and it is here that the music works its magic…
The production allows the combination of music and vocals to take centre stage equally and simultaneously, breathing life into the listening experience as a privilege to be savoured through attention and care, for nothing of this jewel that dwells in the celestial vault should be wasted…

The Blue Herons - Sleepy Town
