My Review: Sunnbrella - Heartworn

Sunnbrella - Heartworn

London's dreams are full of sunshine: the Sunnbrella meteor drops them through delicate and essential harmonic laps, a dance step that knows good rhythm and a structure that lets out tender tears in an embrace of the senses that conquer even the most rigid soul. The pedals of the guitars are the manifest declaration of inventions designed to generate the impact of emotions to escape from home and become senses in flight. With obvious crossovers with Dreampop and the most cultured Indie Rock, everything reveals the need for rhythms wrapped in poetry and the desire to create clean air: compositions as oppositions to boredom, to the weak and soft propensity for life. The warmth and joy of living with annexed sadness takes its place, which melts in listening to these notes with warm rays on the skin.

Desire is established in their freshness: their ability is to ally themselves with time to fill it with waves and impulses that remove the clouds from thoughts and legitimise the desire to make musical art an alliance project with intelligence, because the marriage of fun and commitment is undeniable in this record. An example of this is Polyester, a tepid plunge that through its singing grazes the skin with the support of a keyboard and a minimal electronic part that bewitches, up to a mini guitar solo that opens the wings of the dreamy dance.

In this umbrella coloured by sounds that make you smile, comes Defend Urself, with an intro reminiscent of early Curve, then taking on the guise of a song that from the 90s comes to the present day, over an elaborate rhythm section: one of their many moments of great creativity. Alternative and Indie find in Ivy League the operating system to give Dreampop a kiss and allow a light shoegaze to join the party. And if you are as fond as the old scribe of the sumptuousness of Sarah Records, here is the enchanting A Week Or So, a little naked star that radiates the night with the two voices that embrace and conquer the heart in the refrain.

But the whole of Heartworn presents different stylistic approaches, a gigantic desire to go beyond one's own taste and to erect, rather, a sonic scaffolding that can generate joy: like being on the first day of school, where without enthusiasm one could not make it to the second. This is how the album is: a mental exercise in openness, experimentation, crossovers, impulses, within a studio that allows learning.

And we get excited, we get impulses, we go back in time but without nostalgia: the band from the English capital has on its sonic radar the intelligent mode of swirling writings, in a gymnasium where melody and strength go voluntarily hand in hand, for an excellent result and to make these sparks one of the most desirable works of this 2023...

Londra ha i sogni pieni di sole: la meteora Sunnbrella li lascia cadere attraverso giri armonici delicati ed essenziali, un passo di danza che conosce il buon ritmo e una struttura che fa uscire lacrime tenere in un abbraccio dei sensi che conquistano anche l’anima più rigida. I pedali delle chitarre sono la dichiarazione manifesta di invenzioni atte a generare l’impatto delle emozioni per fuoriuscire da casa e divenire sensi in volo. Con incroci evidenti con il Dreampop e l’Indie Rock più colto, tutto palesa il bisogno di ritmi avvolti da poesia e la voglia di creare aria pulita: composizioni come opposizioni alla noia, alla debole e molle propensione alla vita. Prende posto il calore e la gioia del vivere con annessa la tristezza, che si scioglie in un ascolto di queste note con i raggi caldi sulla pelle.

Nella loro freschezza si stabilisce il desiderio: la loro abilità è quella di allearsi al tempo per riempirlo di onde e impulsi che tolgono le nuvole sui pensieri e legittimano il desiderio di fare dell’arte musicale un progetto di alleanza con l’intelligenza, perché il connubio tra il divertimento e l’impegno è innegabile in questo disco. Ne è esempio Polyester, un tuffo tiepido che mediante il suo cantato sfiora la pelle con il supporto di una tastiera e una minima parte elettronica che ammalia, sino a un mini solo di chitarra che fa aprire le ali del ballo sognante.

In questo ombrello colorato da suoni che fanno sorridere, arriva Defend Urself, con l’intro che richiama i primi Curve, per poi assumere le vesti di un brano che dagli anni ’90 arriva ai giorni nostri, su una elaborata sezione ritmica: uno dei loro molteplici momenti di grande creatività. L’alternative e l’Indie trovano in Ivy League il sistema operativo per dare al Dreampop un bacio e permettere a un leggero Shoegaze di prendere parte al party. E se siete amanti come il vecchio scriba della sontuosità della Sarah Records, ecco l’incantevole A Week Or So, piccola stella nuda che irradia la notte con le due voci che nel ritornello abbracciano e conquistano il cuore.

Ma tutto Heartworn presenta diversi approcci stilistici, una gigantesca voglia di andare oltre il proprio gusto e di erigere, piuttosto, una impalcatura sonora che possa generare allegria: come essere al primo giorno di scuola, dove senza entusiasmo non si potrebbe arrivare al secondo. Così è l’album: un esercizio mentale di apertura, sperimentazione, incroci, impulsi, all’interno di uno studio che permette l’apprendimento.

E ci si emoziona, si diventa slanci, si torna indietro nel tempo ma senza nostalgia: la band della capitale inglese ha nel suo radar sonoro l’intelligente modalità di scritture vorticose, in una palestra dove melodia e forza vanno volontariamente di pari passo, per un risultato eccellente e per fare di queste scintille uno dei lavori più desiderabili di questo 2023…
