My Review: Antipole & Paris Alexander - Crystalline

Antipole & Paris Alexander - Crystalline

When a work certifies the change in the world, goes out of its way to scrutinise its movements, to colour its angles with impressive methodicality, to reveal its moods and slowly disintegrating habits, the result can only be exhilarating, no matter how feverish the overall picture.

Karl Morten Dahl is an experienced artist, eager to navigate through the fragments of heterogeneous impulses, compacting the visions of his own musical impetus to establish a sense of continuity between style and mode, this time, however, raising the bar to take a leap towards that Norwegian sky always at odds between the desire for sunshine and the ability to enjoy darkness. The latest effort is a sweet martyrdom, delightful and dynamic, created in co-ownership with Paris Alexander, another multi-talented genius. The talent from Brighton does something better than lend himself: he enters Antipole's project as a man who also has access to command of operations, for a result that is inside the chest, well guarded.

Crystalline is a sonic concept album, a glass glove that smashes convictions and certainties to bring a welcome fragility, through an icy circle of anaesthetic and surgical dance steps.

Surprising, it offers songs like hidden tears with a partial ceremonial dress, but, thanks to the Darkwave fury kept in check and the elegant but murderous Coldwave, it transports an art project of absolute gloomy splendour into reality.

As if the pain were playing hide and seek, the whole becomes contained through the guitar lines that take care to make it dreamy, held together by a putty of keyboards that oxidise and consolidate, to give the composition the colour of eternity, which becomes the true identity of these howls that are shy but capable of signalling the hunger for expression that the two artists have experienced and transported in these grooves. All perfect to end up in a ballroom with no windows, no strobe lights, no way out, to experience a suffocation that makes one surprisingly free. Karl, as if he had found within himself a never-before-desired projectuality, creates a visual and auditory field, in whose union strength is compactness, to achieve continuity, creating a record that becomes a novel. Able to write lyrics with adrenalin built in and using his voice like a delirium in a straitjacket, Paris Alexander makes everything perfect, spinning emotions even further. The ambient imagery is in these movements, sinister, sombre, between horror and science fiction, the caution that takes it upon itself never to develop noise and outbursts, but to keep the palpitations from becoming vulnerable. Sometimes it happens that it is better to suggest than to show an avalanche of elements: Karl and Alexander know this and this is the strong point of an album that rises, for the old scribe, to the highest position on the musical podium of 2023. Careful and skilful in making the compositions the film of a film that cannot be seen but perceived, the two become astronomers, magicians, masons of thought, cementing the work in a gothic dust with no tricks or clothes of belonging: the sense of abandonment in each track is enough to know that they offer no consolation, but a foothold to join us in a delicate sadness. A gathering without weapons and without claws. As if there were a threat, looming and powerful, this latest effort has the virtue of not seeing one song stand out above the others in order to have a uniqueness that fascinates, attracts, involves and makes it all a sticker on our skin wet with clear, fluorescent emotions. The timbral mixtures turn musical clouds into masses of moving notes, with the aptitude to transform them into a service that leads to the search for truth, amidst electronic beats perfectly supported by the grey brushstrokes of phrases that come out of guitars inebriated by the succession of chords.

This is the most mature work for the Norwegian Harlequin, who, as if he had emerged from a corridor full of autumn leaves, drops a wind full of sighs on us, giving his beloved Darkwave the task of being a captain with a long beard and a steady hand, to steer the boat of compositions towards perfection. There is no doubt that Karl and Alexander have not invented obscurity, but they have given it a better, balanced and real dignity, to annex to their needs a necessary transformation: eight wise pills enter our circuit, absorbing the acids and releasing sociable toxins necessary to balance our desire to immerse ourselves in their musical ocean. Electronica and Coldwave are real expressions in search of companionship, children of that North that for forty years has been sealing its loyalty pact with countries that have received more attention. But this album in 2023 cannot be beaten: every abyss finds its epicentre in the pain and maturity of believable invention and that is what Crystalline is made of.

Which is a compact Odyssey of slow-moving icebergs, there is never any sense of a sonic maiden rising up, conjuring up, dragging listeners along to discover the rest: Karl has created a canvas, used brushes on a perimeter that has the frame of enchantment, so that everything is a wrapping to be lived as an experience, salvific or not this does not matter, what is clear is the will not to see preferences create injustice. Feelings and uncomfortable thoughts (masterfully put forward by Alexander) touch the present-day void and force it to reflection, with Master Karl directing the emotional traffic in the library where each of the eight pages writes the story of a memorable work: that it is the best of the year is a consequence of this wedge which is cold only on the surface that is Crystalline...

My Review: Antipole & Paris Alexander - Bleached

Antipole & Paris Alexander - Bleached

There is no doubt, listening to this new song, taken from the forthcoming album Crystalline, that the two artists have written an immense circle of beauty, amidst vapours and subtle mysteries, encompassed within talents that know how to develop research.

If we take Bleached, we notice how Paris Alexander's pen and Karl Morten Dahl's hand are one and the same, blinking to create an atmosphere filled with a tamed tension, like an armed stream of consciousness that comes out to make the universe stimulated in welcoming this stalagmite, ingenious and effective, to connect us to an unconscious that must come out of its shell.

On a Coldwave track with a discreet twinning with the sumptuous Nordic Darkwave, here are guitar and synth sparkles that make the track a sad-eyed meteor without leading to depression but certifying, from Paris Alexander's splendid words, that there is an obvious connection with possession that must be manifested. The guitar is a suffocating dusting of the useless that lurks over the soul: Karl, like a magician who doesn't need words, wiggles his fingers with a sequence of notes that disarm, fascinate, make our mood pleasantly gloomy.  And he knows how to keep only the indispensable active, because of his class that never encompasses what is not needed. For his part, Alexander approaches the microphone with a vocal that contains the right balance, style, effective in making his lyrics become physical, between sighs and a journey towards a baritone mode that suits him.

If desolation and surrender can be seen, then the song will make them a dance movement, but by the end of the listening, new energy will magically arrive to give you strength...

We are taken, enraptured, conquered and there is no doubt that the two have put together an album that will teach us and give us the bridge between the real and the oneiric, on which we can walk whenever we want...

My Reviews: Painted Romans - Sing to the Child (Single Mix)

Painted Romans - Sing to the Child (Single Mix)

Praise be to the darkness that turns on the light.

The whip with guitars of Neo Folk ordinance and the fold on the cobblestones of imaginary roads of the 1700s arrive with this work.

Let's get smart and embark, destination Norway.

In that mysterious country, with its rarefied and sincere shadows, the oblique chromosomes of a band in a state of grace stir: sometimes a song is enough to touch the sky...

Take Mats Davidsen's talent and wait: he has a story to tell you and seduces your curiosity with a muffled, therapeutic flash, with his voice registering up to baritone, to make you sink into his marvellous cantilena.

Having identified the balsamic sequence of chords, the song is a journey into the thoughts of a girl and her child, to identify the lives of souls that must stay connected, and the song becomes a delicious and poignant lullaby, with tears visiting our hardened hearts.

Everything will get wild soon, but these notes seem to be able to stop time and soften the imminent future a little. There's no point in making comparisons, forget Death in June, let the silliness go away, live in these minutes and give that baby a caress...

My Review: Batboner - Flaccid EP

 Batboner - Flaccid EP

Take the wildest possible suitcase and fly here to Norway: awaiting you are the spectacular Batboner, the Nordic gods of decadent sentiment who seek to make a blood pact with Deathrock, while reinvigorating their feverish wrists with remarkable Gothic Rock: it's cross toxicity, all is accomplished in this pagan rite inside the church of the severed heads by the whiplash of that Hardcore Punk that is certainly not lacking in these parts.

Light In The Void is the train on which Dave Vanian takes tea, with blackish biscuits, and rides fast across the snowy plains of sadness.

Skretch is the will to live that wavers, between bass hits and guitar that knows very well who Rikk Agnew is, in a fire that illuminates the fog-filled woods. The voice is an angry cathedral of clear tonsils.

Litch is a gothic frustration in wartime: guitars armed, the bass is a continuous bomb and the drumming a machine gun that holds its breath and tries not to go too fast.

Flaccid is the funeral that is performed during the party of ghosts watching young men masturbate: violent without overdoing it, it scatters the seeds of a consequential sadness that seduces every evil spirit.

Cover up lightly even if you're in the North: the Batboners will make you smell burning skin...

My Review: Antipole • Paris Alexander / Perceptions

Antipole - Paris Alexander / Perceptions

Two absolute stars return to collaborate producing a stunning single, in anticipation of the album coming soon.

Meanwhile: the astonishment is equal to the very high appraisal that the old scribe has of these characters, who offer the art of music yet another river on which to stretch out the body of one's mind, for the immense pleasure of being inside a song that sounds like a forest moving at night, in the far north of thoughts, to conquer the dance and the conviction that Karl and Paris are souls with a scalpel in their hands and that for the umpteenth time they are operating on the mode of how a song is composed to establish the possibility of perfection, which, punctually, is revealed.

Two hundred and twenty-eight seconds of Darkwave oscillations and Coldwave aromas, among breaths shrouded in mist, to allow the electronics to play their part, like glue. The sensual movement moves forward, meeting Karl's guitar that sows tears in flight, while Alexander's voice feeds enchanting perceptions and at the same time gives a pleasant unease. All this over a carpet of keyboards that take hold of thoughts and seduce them, impact with them and bring them together. Something sad, prone to fragility, comes out of this spectacular, classy performance, making us realise that the two's art is not detached from reality but rather photographs it: a consoling act of great importance. Music, like ice with a sensual progression, crosses the North Pole, tracing trails even in the sky: it seems that this is the area for a resounding discovery, an artistic swing that brings something expected because, let's face it, one is always looking forward to the work done together by these two creatures who know how to stun us. When pleasure and pain become an embrace that makes us aware ...

My Review: Madrugada - Chimes at Midnight

Madrugada

My review

Madrugada - Chimes at Midnight

On every face there is a comet that ends its journey in the centre of our heart, from where it slowly turns into a seed that will later become a flower, which will make our life a beautiful sight.
In all this, there are Nordic fires that come into contact with the comet to speed up the blossoming: they are called Madrugada, angels of sound that whisper the richness of our good fortune when we listen to them.
They made us wait 14 years before returning to seduce and charm us without restraint, with a slightly different line-up but still able to eliminate the ugliness and transform pain into an embrace with the scent of joy.
And the atmospheres are a majestic bow, a taking of our hand of need to fill it with gems and sighs, with the Norwegian band strolling through the 60s on a feast of subtle, vibrant melodies.
Flown to Los Angeles to Sunset Sound Studio, legendary Producer Kevin Ratterman perfected songs that I imagine also came as a surprise to him, perhaps fearful of undermining this energy that found sweet ways to present itself. The three survivors of the band (Sivert Høyem, Frode Jacobsen,Jon Lauvland Pettersen) decided to include Kato Thomassen and Krister Knutsen, who were already part of Sivert's solo project.
The amalgamation proved to be quick and effective, and the songs were born keeping the Madrugada style intact, but adding new possibilities.
And so we find ourselves more dreamy, perfectly enclosed by their sonic embrace, which comforts and suggests unknown forces.
And because we need beautiful things we become deliberately enchanted, we abandon ourselves on the banks of these northern rivers, in this wind full of smiles, to sink totally into emotions that make us feel alive.
And Sivert's voice?
There's no question about it: it was born to confuse our senses and now, with these new songs, it has definitively made us wait for its power, its timbres that stick like glue to our ravenous need to keep it inside deep listening.
And he kisses us with his warmth, with the register of his voice which, passing from low to high tones, puts our hearts and minds in touch.
The music seems to have the blessing of the sun and the night, happily visiting the globe, making us feel the songs like suitcases and eyes full of adventure.
A resounding return, a flash that will become the constant of this 2022: if it is not the album of the year, it will only be because some miracle will have to happen...

Song by song

Nobody Loves You Like I Do

It all starts with a bass and drums that bring us back to Madrugada and Bad Seeds, but when Sivert's vocals come in we are closer to Davey Ray Moor and his Cousteau. The song has an atmosphere that the Norwegian band has already managed to personalise and make unique in the past. A bridge that enchants and then changes slightly in the refrain, in which Sivert's high register captivates us.

Running From The Love Of Your Life

Kato Thomassen's guitar roars like it used to do on Sivert's solo albums, drawing heavily from the style of the never forgotten Robert Burås, who died in July 2007. The song offers us colours and lights that enlighten our smiles: this ballad has what it takes to make us addicted.

Help Yourself To Me

A piano that seems to be played by Nick Cave's fingers gives us all the qualities of a simple music where the subtle keyboards stand out and the voice calls for help, doing it with class and elegance.

Stabat Mater

It is a jolt that shakes us, squeezes us like lemons waiting to drip on the floor. It is the France of the chansonniers that pulses within this marvellous atmosphere.
Everything is suspended: it seems that the sky becomes a mass of clouds without a beat, pervaded by a slowly moving sadness.

Slowly Turns The Wheel

The maturity of the five finds its centre of gravity in this track: these minutes are the perfect synthesis of the old Madrugada and the new ones, where everything seems to be inclined to become enlightening and powerful pop.
They know how to make the breath stop with keyboards that seem inclined to drama, pressed by vocals that take it by the hand and everything flies into our tender palpitations, wet with wonderful tears.

Imagination

Few bands like Madrugada can capture the sacredness of Leonard Cohen's last albums. Imagination is an example of this, sounding like a flock hungry for distance and the desire to bring glances into our intimacy. An arrangement that recalls the delicacy of Michael Nyman. All sewn on the skin: the eternal has found a place to rest.

Dreams at midnight

Once upon a time there was What's On Your Mind.
Now, next to it, it comes the album's title track. Keyboards and guitar make us soggy but happy children, when tears stretch the future. And the semi-acoustic guitar makes love to the electric one to remind us well how unbeatable Madrugada are in songs like these. The guitar solo, without exaggeration, gets into the meaning of the lyrics and makes them perfect. And the refrain? Emphatic and soft at the same time. Endless applause.

Call My Name

With little breath left, we are apparently benefited by this pastel-coloured atmosphere. But then the blow of the sabre comes: the five guys don't need to raise their voices or the rhythm because it is in the interrupted atmospheres, resumed and then changed, that our amazement can live and grow.

Empire Blues

Madrugada's blues can sometimes be a perfect cross between American and English blues: we already know that very well. But here there is something new that is not immediately understandable. It arrives after each time of listening and conquers us. So we hear the guitars of the typical Delta area, and we are at the beginning of the 30s of the last century, talking all the time with the English blues of the 60s. All of which leads us to see the music in this track as a timeless woman wearing an enchanting dress.

You Promised To Wait For Me

On a carriage that flies over our heads, the song leaves to take us for a ride with it, crossing genres that are held tightly in a conspiratorial embrace and capable of making us understand that we are inhabited by a small star, which with this arrangement will illuminate our listening to make us repeat it...

The World Could Be Falling Down

A cat. The song sounds like a cat that wants to laze around and invite us to enjoy its mantle where we find sweetness, poetry and warmth ready to be listened to. When Sivert sings everything becomes a feather that falls slowly on this grey and blue cat...

Ecstasy

A desire to throw yourself under Sivert's voice that is the sweetest and coziest blanket in the world.
Second by second the instruments come together to release the song in a lullaby that at times seems to become heartbreaking.
And it is a lullaby that does not lead us to be victims of hallucinations, but rather aware of the beauty of this incredible track. Yes, because in the song that concludes this work there is all the intensity of a band in an amazing state of form.
They are tears that melt inside the belly of a perfect album...
