Catalogue - Modern Delusion

The Marseille band's third album is a chaotic journey into the 80s, to put discord inside our convictions, to create doubts, to make us experience nostalgia but slaughtering it all with their devastating irony. Post-Punk, the dirtiest kind, infects us with Noise, as a fun way of disorienting us, but then we immediately realise their methodology, pungent and complete, to lead us to evaluate well what is left of that decade. And here's how they jump back and forth, in and out of references that are multiple but never able to make us realise how much is the real basis for them. This aspect makes them wonderfully and damnably interesting: the delirium of a necessary fervour dwells in these songs, there is an awareness that bumps and teaches, over and over again. Here, then, we are tampered by their art, without a refuge, because they make us dance under the stars, without the need for a future, except to be accompanied by their incredible mastery of being lions roaring over our bored brains...

Catalogue - Modern Delusion

Il terzo album della band di Marsiglia è un caotico viaggio negli anni ’80, per mettere zizzania dentro le nostre convinzioni, per creare dubbi, per farci vivere la nostalgia ma massacrando il tutto con la loro devastante ironia. Il Post-Punk, quello più sporco, si infetta con il Noise, come un divertimento che possa spiazzarci, ma poi si intuisce subito la loro metodologia, pungente e completa, per condurci a valutare bene che cosa è rimasto di quella decade. Ed ecco allora come si salti in avanti e indietro, dentro e fuori i riferimenti che sono multipli ma mai capaci di farci capire quanto sia per loro la vera base di partenza. Questo aspetto li rende meravigliosamente e dannatamente interessanti: il delirio di un fervore necessario abita in queste canzoni, c’è una consapevolezza che urta e insegna, in continuazione. Ecco, quindi, che veniamo manomessi dalla loro arte, senza un rifugio, perché loro ci fanno ballare sotto le stelle, senza la necessità di un futuro, se non quella di farci accompagnare dalla loro incredibile maestria nell’essere dei leoni che ruggiscono sui nostri cervelli annoiati…

My Review: Désar - Into the Sun

Désar - Into the Sun  

A record born while listening to a Toronto radio station, for this Brooklyn-based artist, a man of truly remarkable personal and musical culture.

Listen to his presentation of the album and you will be really pleased. The old scribe could keep quiet, no problem.

But no.

The ten compositions deserve a little comment.

The general atmosphere is that of an exploration of problems, a breathing space that illuminates thoughts with a new form. It counts for a lot to identify the musical zones crossed, used, squeezed like lemons from the juice that is needed to make the palate change. The recitative and the overlapping of voices are magic that comfort and often make us forget that without the singing we would probably be hypnotised and wounded

Lucien Désar is a composer of music with the intention of bringing to mind the Darkwave of the 90s, and I think he has succeeded, but I would add that he has done so by making a few changes that guarantee a caress towards the 80s, while greatly annihilating that of recent years, as his eclecticism is measured but powerful, allowing a flexibility that in the end turns out to be his real trump card.

Exhale's piano is a delirium: the breathing experiences a sudden tremor, the blood swerves and the words are further thorns that drive the throat to writhe. 

This track is enough (don't think it is an unexpected, something different from the rest of the album, because instead it fully represents it), to be in love with an unexpected flutter of wrinkled truths. He is like that: a surprise like a postage stamp with saliva that makes you fall in love with his gems as if you were a child in front of the lightning in the sky.

With Die, sandpaper under the wings of a tank, he packs a punch, and you can hear how the American artist knows how to converse between musical genres, slipping in a siren that sounds like an angry ambulance.

But the art project is really conceived to be an extraordinary repository of chains that touch and create freedom. That of not seeing the time that had disappeared. And this is a credit to him.

If that's not enough for you: the beginning of the resounding Travel to Mars (amidst classical music impetuses, Star Wars cheers, and electronics performing a perfectly successful intervention) will perfectly show you his universe, made up of qualities that know no end.

Grab yourself a glass, fill it with patience and you will drink a record with a unique taste...

Un disco nato ascoltando una radio di Toronto, per questo artista di Brooklyn, uomo dalla cultura personale e musicale davvero notevole.

Ascoltatevi la sua presentazione dell’album e rimarrete davvero soddisfatti. Il vecchio scriba potrebbe tacere, senza alcun problema.

Invece no.

Le dieci composizioni meritano un piccolo commento.

L’atmosfera generale è quella di una esplorazione dei problemi, un respiro che illumini i pensieri di una nuova forma. Conta moltissimo individuare le zone musicali attraversate, usate, spremute come limoni dal succo che serve per far cambiare il sapore al proprio palato. Il recitativo e le sovrapposizioni delle voci sono magie che confortano e ci fanno dimenticare spesso che senza il cantato saremmo probabilmente ipnotizzati e feriti…

Lucien Désar è un compositore di musiche che hanno l’intenzione di far ricordare la Darkwave degli anni ’90 e credo che ci sia riuscito, però aggiungerei che l’ha fatto apportando alcune modifiche che garantiscono la carezza verso gli anni ’80, annichilendo di molto quella degli ultimi anni, in quanto il suo eclettismo è misurato ma potente, permettendo una flessibilità che alla fine risulta essere la sua vera carta vincente.

Il piano di Exhale è un delirio: la respirazione conosce un tremolio improvviso, il sangue sbanda e le parole sono ulteriori spine che spingono la gola a contorcersi. 

Basterebbe questo brano (non crediate sia un imprevisto, un qualcosa di diverso dal resto dell’album, perché invece lo rappresenta pienamente), per essere innamorati di un inatteso sventolio di verità rugose. Lui è così: una sorpresa come un francobollo con la saliva che ti fa innamorare delle sue gemme come se fossi un bambino davanti ai lampi del cielo.

Con Die, carta vetrata sotto le ali di un carro armato, si prende un pugno, e si nota come l’artista americano sappia dialogare tra i generi musicali, infilando una sirena che pare una ambulanza inferocita.

Ma il progetto artistico è davvero concepito per essere un deposito straordinario di catene che sfiorandosi creano la libertà. Quella di non vedere scomparire il tempo che fu. E questo è un merito che gli dobbiamo riconoscere.

Se non vi basta: l’inizio della clamorosa Travel to Mars (tra impeti di musica classica, Star Wars che applaude, e l’elettronica che compie un intervento perfettamente riuscito) vi mostrerà perfettamente il suo universo, fatto di qualità che non conoscono fine.

Prendetevi un bicchiere di vetro, riempitelo di pazienza e berrete un disco dal gusto unico…

HANN * Saddle - Billed Stork

Once upon a time there was Pop that filled afternoons with excited radios and listeners watching the time slip by towards dinnertime, with intimate satisfaction.

Listening to the latest song by Hannah, aka HANN, takes us back to that time, with the seventies dancing happily like children. Maybe it's because of the funky guitar, or because of a keyboard gently resting on the keys, or because of the Mancunian songwriter's sweet-toned teenage voice, but the feeling that one can really refrain from leaden thoughts becomes an absolute truth, as well as a pleasant one. Delicate, sunny, joyful, at least in its music, the single seems to be a revisitation of what the city, which was a beacon in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, had forgotten to be.

Huge hype would need to be built up for this girl so intensely capable of using politeness and lustre in her singing.

Listen to these two hundred and eight seconds and a sudden beach pervaded with peace will place itself in the busy centre of listeners effectively whisked away to melody…

C’era una volta il Pop che riempiva i pomeriggi con radio eccitate e ascoltatori che vedevano scivolare il tempo verso l’ora di cena, con intima soddisfazione.

Ascoltando l’ultima canzone di Hannah, in arte HANN, si ritorna a quel periodo, con gli anni Settanta che danzano felici come bambini. Sarà per la chitarra funky, o per via di una tastiera che si posa con delicatezza sui tasti o per la voce da adolescente piena di dolcezza dell’autrice Mancuniana, ma la sensazione che ci si possa davvero astenere da pensieri di piombo diventa una verità assoluta, oltre che piacevole. Delicata, solare, gioiosa, almeno nella musica, il singolo pare essere frutto di una rivisitazione di ciò che la città, che fu il faro negli anni Sessanta, Settanta e Ottanta, aveva dimenticato di essere.

Occorrerebbe costruire un hype enorme per questa ragazza così intensamente capace di usare il garbo e di dare lustro alle sue diverse forme nel cantato.

Ascoltate questi duecento e otto secondi e una spiaggia improvvisa pervasa di pace si piazzerà nel centro trafficato di ascolti efficacemente sbalzati via a colpi di melodia…

Girlfriends and Boyfriends - Fallacy of Fairness

How much do you like Canada's overlook on England, with songs that seem to have been inspired by the old land of Albion?

It's been two years but this album endures, still acerbic and melodic, with virtues that don't wither because it bears witness to a time that cannot be forgotten.

This Post-Punk is a river, a lake, a cool square that blows on the dust of the 80s and moves everything towards Manchester, London, Sheffield, as a bow to the history those cities were able to create. The songs flow fast, impetuous and robust, kilos and kilos of drumming full of bones, with the bass pushing, the guitars full of asbestos and well articulated to arouse continuous emotions, the keyboard is always melancholic and the melodies are so easily welcoming, generating tumult and looks full of thoughts, like a torrent full of colours that can enchant even if they are yellowing...

There are many, many moments in this overflowing work where one has the feeling that the best of those memorable years have been summed up and explained in a perfect way.

All you have to do is start listening and you will be in the midst of the poetry of a cloud that eternity will not be able to sweep away...

Girlfriends and Boyfriends - Fallacy of Fairness

Quanto piace il Canada che si affaccia sull’Inghilterra, con canzoni che sembrano essere state ispirate dalla vecchia terra di Albione?

Sono passati due anni ma questo album resiste, sempre acerbo e melodico, con virtù che non appassiscono perché è testimone di un tempo che non si riesce a dimenticare.

Questo Post-Punk è un fiume, un lago, un piazzale fresco che soffia sulla polvere degli anni ’80 e sposta tutto verso Manchester, Londra, Sheffield, come un inchino alla storia che quelle città hanno saputo creare. Le canzoni scorrono veloci, irruenti e robuste, chili e chili di drumming pieno di ossa, con il basso che spinge, le chitarre che sanno essere piene di amianto e ben articolate per suscitare emozioni continue, la tastiera è sempre malinconica e le melodie sono così facilmente accoglienti, generando tumulti e sguardi pieni di pensieri, come una fiumana piena di colori che possono incantare anche se in fase di ingiallimento…

Molti, tantissimi i momenti nei quali, in questo straripante lavoro, si ha la sensazione che il meglio di quei memorabili anni siano stati riassunti e spiegati in un modo perfetto.

Non vi resta che iniziare l’ascolto e sarete in mezzo alla poesia di una nube che l’eternità non riuscirà a spazzare via…

An extraordinary talent, Lila: capable of having precise ideas, of knowing how to choose the right instruments, how to play them, and of being precise in the structure of her songs, so full of intensity and that seductive penumbra that galvanises the listener. A refined display of a methodicalness that absolutely needs strong and emblematic themes, the album reveals a darkness that admits to our gaze. The French nature of the plot is beautifully preserved and everything becomes minimalist in these Post-Coldwave flashes of great generosity, where the electronic part keeps everything compact. It's lashings of overflowing Synth, a series of stimuli that shake and then there's her voice that perfectly sums up the contrast with the musical side. After almost two years, yö is still a clear spark in the darkness of a music that struggles to be a clean mirror...

Vincent Christ - The Gift Of Tears

A delight in the absence of oxygen: Vincent takes our breath away, scrambling us with his guitar that reminds us so much of Robert Smith in his best days, with his focus on associating the Post-Punk movement with a singing mode that brings a smile to our face, to drag it all into the conviction that the lyrics are the key to understanding the meaning of this single that swirls around a room, bouncing, unstoppable, again and again. One hundred and fifty-six seconds: it may not seem like much for a song, but here we are in front of a work of art that will stand the test of time, if only we are able to notice some novelty, the ability to shake up the tired attitude of clichés that kill musical genres. Let us celebrate the freshness of a decadent expression that will eventually leave on our face the smile of someone who loves pain and prefers it to fake joy...

Vincent Christ - The Gift Of Tears

Una delizia in assenza di ossigeno: Vincent ci toglie il fiato, ci strapazza con la sua chitarra che tanto ci ricorda Robert Smith dei giorni migliori, con la sua attenzione ad associare al movimento Post-Punk una modalità di canto che regali un sorriso, per trascinare il tutto nella convinzione che il testo sia la chiave per intendere il senso di questo singolo che rotea dentro una stanza, rimbalza, inarrestabile, again and again. Centocinquantasei secondi: possono sembrare pochi per una canzone, ma qui siamo davanti a un’opera d’arte che rimarrà nel tempo, se solamente saremo in grado di accorgerci di alcune novità, della capacità di dare una scossa alla stanca attitudine di cliché che uccidono i generi musicali. Si celebri la freschezza di una decadente espressione che alla fine lascerà sul nostro volto il sorriso di chi ama il dolore e lo preferisce rispetto alla finta gioia…

Our Endless Echo - The Slow Decay

We go into the dark fog of New Zealand, to be part of a circuit of thoughts with a synthetic skin but a Post-Punk soul: the dynamic propensity of the union of distances that seem insurmountable excels in this work. Instead, we are in front of a miracle, the powerful auditory assemblage to compact different eras. We oscillate constantly in genres, in winks, in the stances of an infinite love for the aspect of creating situations that can slightly darken the mood and create minimal but splendid zones of fear. The use of reverb makes all this more evocative and it is wonderful to get lost in, for example, the proverbial The Error In Our Ways, where it sounds like listening to electronic Death In June on acid. But it is the whole album that makes our perception a summary of what our luck should be: immense!

Our Endless Echo - The Slow Decay

Si va nella nebbia oscura Neozelandese, per far parte di un circuito di pensieri dalla pelle sintetica ma dall’anima Post-Punk: eccelle, in questo lavoro, la propensione dinamica dell’unione di distanze che sembrano insormontabili. Invece siamo davanti a un miracolo, all’assemblaggio uditivo potente per compattare epoche diverse. Si oscilla in continuazione nei generi, negli ammiccamenti, nelle prese di posizione di un amore infinito per l’aspetto della creazione di situazioni in grado di incupire leggermente l’umore e di creare zone minime ma splendide di paura. L’uso del riverbero rende più suggestivo tutto questo ed è bellissimo perdersi, per fare un esempio, nella proverbiale The Error In Our Ways, dove sembra di ascoltare dei Death In June elettronici sotto acido. Ma è tutto l’album a fare della nostra percezione un riassunto di come dovrebbe essere la nostra fortuna: immensa!

Lila Ehjä -yö

Un talento straordinario, Lila: capace di avere delle idee precise, di saper scegliere gli strumenti adatti, di suonarli, e di precisa nella struttura dei suoi brani, così colmi di intensità e di quella seducente penombra che galvanizza l’ascoltatore. Raffinata esibizione di una metodica che necessita assolutamente di tematiche forti ed emblematiche, l’album rivela un’oscurità che ammette al suo interno il nostro sguardo. La natura francese della trama è splendidamente conservata e tutto si fa minimalista in questi bagliori Post-Coldwave di grande generosità, dove la parte elettronica mantiene compatto il tutto. Sono sferzate di Synth piene di ghiaccio strabordante, una serie di stimoli che scuotono e c’è poi la sua voce che riassume perfettamente il contrasto con il lato musicale. Dopo quasi due anni, yö è ancora una limpida scintilla nel buio di una musica che fatica a essere uno specchio pulito…

Le mie Recensioni: Noromakina - Luna (singolo) e Vile Vortex (album)

Noromakina  – Luna

Era il 2009 e nella Bogotà piena di contrasti, Juan Manuel, A.k.a Mel Zb., cominciava la sua stabile permanenza artistica che lo condusse a esordire l’anno successivo con il singolo Despair. Nulla può fermare questa mente ricoperta di polvere sudamericana: il calore e il freddo come la piantina di una sofferenza che dilata il suo battito per avvolgere ciò che si imbatte nel suo campo gotico. 

L’ultimo drink alcolico è Luna, manifesto elettronico, imbevuto di liquidi Retrowave, EBM e la consueta abilità di portare il mix di Post-Punk e Synthwave nel suo cantato, il recitativo che immobilizza ogni distrazione. Musica avvolgente, trascinante, davvero un cocktail sublime di liquidi color porpora, in grado di annebbiare ogni resistenza e conquistare un ascolto che si genuflette di fronte alla potenza perfettamente allacciata alla melodia minimalista. Una serie di chiodi elettronici che vengono martellati dalla sua volontà, regina unica di un brano in odore di perfezione. 

Noromakina - Vile Vortex

Un album può avere la capacità di raccogliere i passi di un percorso, di esibire i segnali di bisogni comparabili a movenze attitudinali piene di costellazioni magiche e non sempre buie. Mel Zb scalda la notte con valanghe di beats, di scorciatoie sensoriali per far irrigidire i nostri corpi in danze nervose ma stabili. Un Maestro di eleganza che fortifica i crateri dei generi musicali in forte bisogno di essere rivitalizzati. Puntuale, preciso, il musicista Colombiano sferra l’attacco alla mediocrità con dodici vascelli, con intorno a loro la sintomatologia di un'estasi che cerca di procurarsi cibo con i nostri ascolti e di contagiare ogni nostro desiderio. Con la perfetta masterizzazione di Pedro Code (il geniale Principe della macchina darkwave IAMTHESHADOW), si assiste a una prodigiosa corsa nel cuore dei primi anni Duemila, con manciate di sguardi verso l’EBM più colta della fine degli anni Ottanta. Il sincrono perfetto di strumenti analogici e il moderno campionario digitale, mette l’artista nella condizione di poter oscillare nelle onde lunghe delle possibilità, mischiando le carte, mentre la dance floor non smette di ricevere stimoli e creare piacevoli e cupi intasamenti. Una dimostrazione di forza, una condensa di ispirazioni e conflittualità ammaestrate per poter sviluppare una notevole ricerca. Un disco che odora di internazionalità, libero di spargere le sue spine, con in aggiunta un notevole lavoro di liriche gonfie di mistero, come una ferita incomprensibile ma che si rivela piacevole. L’album accende ricordi, fa visitare zone della mente come una necrosi che produce vitamine, una gamma infinita di contraddizioni incredibilmente scaltre nel divenire gemme, per oscurare maggiormente la notte, per celebrarne la bellezza e il senso, mentre il fiato viene sparso nella zona danzante…

Noromakina - Luna

It was 2009 and in the Bogotá full of contrasts, Juan Manuel, A.k.a Mel Zb., began his stable artistic tenure that led him to debut the following year with the single Despair. Nothing can stop this mind covered in South American dust: the heat and cold as the seedling of suffering that expands its pulse to envelope what comes across its gothic field.

The last alcoholic drink is Luna, an electronic manifesto, soaked in Retrowave liquids, EBM and the usual ability to bring the mix of Post-Punk and Synthwave into its singing, the recitative that immobilises every distraction. Enveloping, enthralling music, truly a sublime cocktail of purple-coloured liquids, capable of clouding all resistance and winning over a listener who genuflects before the power perfectly laced with minimalist melody. A series of electronic nails that are hammered out by her will, the unique queen of a track that smells of perfection.

Noromakina - Vile Vortex

An album can have the capacity to gather the steps of a path, to exhibit the signs of needs comparable to attitudinal movements full of magical constellations that are not always dark. Mel Zb warms the night with avalanches of beats, of sensory shortcuts to make our bodies stiffen in nervous but stable dances. A master of elegance who fortifies the craters of musical genres in dire need of revitalisation. Punctual, precise, the Colombian musician launches the attack on mediocrity with twelve vessels, with around them the symptomatology of an ecstasy that seeks to procure food with our listening and to infect our every desire. With perfect mastering by Pedro Code (the genius Prince of the darkwave machine IAMTHESHADOW), we are treated to a prodigious ride into the heart of the early 2000s, with handfuls of glances towards the most cultured EBM of the late 1980s. The perfect synchronisation of analogue instruments and the modern digital sampler, puts the artist in a position to oscillate in the long waves of possibilities, shuffling the cards, while the dance floor never ceases to receive stimuli and create pleasant and sombre clogs. A show of strength, a condensation of inspirations and conflicts trained to develop a remarkable research. An album that smells of internationality, free to spread its thorns, with in addition a remarkable work of lyrics swollen with mystery, like an incomprehensible but pleasant wound. The album ignites memories, makes one visit areas of the mind like a necrosis that produces vitamins, an infinite range of contradictions that are incredibly cunning in becoming gems, to darken the night even more, to celebrate its beauty and meaning, while the breath is scattered in the dancing zone...
