Iamnoone - together alone
To lose someone, something, to feel thoughts become tangles without solutions, to plunge into the attempt to deliberate a primitive but necessary sentence: having to bring out a way of being oneself, without obligatorily changing one's identity altogether.
In the final zone of pandemic, the two golden-hearted and black-nailed horsemen settle a decisive uppercut in the centre of our waverings: Iamnoone returns to teach us a new attitude with a crystal painting that will transport us to a renewed consciousness, without being in need of oxygen tanks.
While remaining, with regard to the musical style, always in the vicinity of clouds with grey skin, the duo accelerates the choice of a pop methodology that makes this album a gem of absolute value, for a creativity that allows two different entities of expression to be able to coexist peacefully, without quarrels.
Personal relationships (so severely scarred, compromised, imploded and exploded in nearly three years) are filtered, blessed, shaken, put back into circulation on the streets of the world with eight satellite blasts, because from a distance the sounds don't hurt and the colours can still be seen: the best work of the two guys has the wisdom, the skill of a cautious hurricane, making us dance on the waves of a Post-punk kept at bay, giving Cold Wave the task of piloting the sensory ship trying to keep on board prisms of Minimal Wave. With the almost carefree freshness of Pop splinters to make it all a bit sparkling.
Loneliness becomes the centrality that is processed, sought at its devastating and corrosive core, to determine choices that can give a modicum of colour to purple and bloodless faces. Philippe and Seth enter the laboratory equipped with intentions, tools, studies and a flashlight in their minds, to make the murky visible while finding a place to position a new temple. It is always the night that fills the drive of their creations, but there is an intention to leave the darkness alone, to put it to the test.
Judges, priests, doctors, scientists, masons, dancers: Iamnoone knows multiple ways to capture the essential and to release doubts from the cage. But the latter still breathes within their compositions, just enough to give continuity to the previous ones without having to experience the trauma of a divorce.
A work that declares its autonomy and detachment from opposing forces because it has within it pillars of dancing concrete, capable of running away from any possible attack and criticism. Something magically invulnerable comes out of these grooves, and it is incandescent at the end of our listening, even if the musical genres are unfairly associated with coldness. Between the music and the words, our hearts become pyres in a perpetual state of celebration, we have good reason for it, given the quality we are offered to not only enjoy but more importantly to grow.
Musically: the guitars become less obvious but no less industrious, on the contrary, there is a sublime work of excellent contortions, of wandering movements that give meaning to the main matrix of the compositions which is conferred by the combination of bass and synth. And so it is a trinomial that sounds like a gothic orchestra in a state of grace in contact with the sky, unfiltered, to give complexity and harmony, to make the songs become a compact spark with a thousand entrances and with no exit because one has the feeling that only what is needed goes in, without wavering.
The album slips into the caves where identity deals with the empty spaces and the ones swollen with happenings that have dismembered truths and authenticities, finding a way to untie the knot that threatened to make every perception commit suicide.
It is time to close the eyes dancing and to examine this record song by song, the old scribe will be moved in stable intensity...
Song by Song
1 - king of pain
Can one be more robust without relying on a plethora of sound normally used by the majority? Of course one can: the opening song of this work proves it to us, as the band finds (seemingly) delicate ways to define an obvious expressive growth but the whole is a well-placed slap, giving synth inlays the impression of relying on downhill dreams, while instead we witness human limitations unable to grasp how much feelings have changed, ending up as a tenuous storm.
2 - martyr of love
A dancing cross, a dark diamond of Nordic origin, wanders as if afraid, with Seth's linear bass full of melancholy, while Philippe becomes a dreamy circle, over a Coldwave base of guitars in the rear but perfect to guard the texture of a synth in a state of grace: give Iamnoone a few notes and you get the impression of a bullet full of moonbeams.
3 - together alone
Here is the pop face covering Seth's work, supported then by a piano with notes like autumn fertiliser, for the album's title song. What a splendor this embrace between the violent oxymoron and a danceable propensity: and it is love at first sweat. The Italo Dance of the 1980s (the one with quality and class) has been dusted off magnetically, while maintaining the stylistic gloom of the Italian duo.
4 - happiness
Let the old followers of the two leaden enchantments rest assured: there is still the known and adored DNA in the veins of Philippe and Seth, but here the past is a calf-biting feline excuse because, while we weep with a memory of ancient expanses of well-being (and everything would seem straightforward compared to the dark dish one is used to with them), we also have glimmers of light coming through guitar chimes reminiscent of The Edge and a melody almost on the current of an enchanting carefreeness.
5 - the edge of the world
We are aboard the stars that offers time to leave it up to us to choose how to waste it... And it is wonder in permanent circulation with this chemical delight that makes our thinking a dutiful contrast agent, allowing the band to determine how things are: they seek and find the summa of their compositional quality and bring it under the sun. Let perfection be in plain sight, always. Drops of Minimal Wave that kiss Coldwave, in the circle of jubilation of sterilized references.
6 - wasn't you
Please unroll the carpet of ancient pearls: Iamnoone becomes an unquestionably sovereign of the enchantment that combines the need to absolutely learn from contrary events, being able not to get the musical petals they grew up with out of their skin, bringing into our layers a perfect combo of melancholy and postmodern power in celestial parade.
7 - the broken spell
Seth takes the lens and lays it on the strings of his bass: and it is the banquet of trembling sound that exhibits its glacial molecule, in generous abundance. The song is a sting in an igloo seeking embrace, the guitar is a sieve able to deflesh, the synth notes kiss the games of the Gods of Darkness, and everything seems to be the atmospheric stench after a nuclear mushroom: the broken spell finds its throne to celebrate the massive sadness that in Philippe's theatrical and magnetic voice perfects the case of a diamond of infinite beauty that we can see among these sound waves.
8 - falling on my knees
Let forgiveness determine the value of feelings: to do so, the closing track seals the whole album, with a musical move that makes the style and concreteness of this killer but silk-gloved duo unattainable. The pace is always consistently fast, but it experiences a slowness within it whose presence we feel, which deceives and takes over as this composition completes the absolute growth of the messengers of the dutiful replacement of behavioral designs. Coldwave puts the polish on the ten fingers and sketches magic and madness, fear and devotion, for a resounding end that establishes the band's final entry into the golden-faced artistic circus...
