Si prepari un monumento a James Eary: basterebbe ciò che ha fatto con i My Sides of the Mountain e con i Coves & Caves per tributargli il merito della sua classe. Lui continua imperterrito e con la nuova formula Debris Discs ha trovato il modo di deliziarci con una canzone che fa parte dell’imminente album, costruito su lettere della seconda guerra mondiale. Ma ciò che si ascolta è una musica effervescente, leggera, voluminosamente sognante, allegra e dotata davvero di un notevole buongusto. È un Electro-Pop che accoglie tra le sue braccia un Dreampop sottile ma efficace, con un organo che ci fa compiere un tuffo nella gloriosa attitudine degli anni Sessanta. Abbiamo davvero bisogno di connetterci ai movimenti delle nuvole in cerca di un bacio…

 Debris Discs - Losing the Matriarch 

Let a monument be prepared for James Eary: what he has done with My Sides of the Mountain and Coves & Caves would be enough to give him credit for his class. He continues undaunted and with his new formula Debris Discs he has found a way to delight us with a song that is part of the forthcoming album, built on letters from the Second World War. But what we hear is music that is effervescent, light, voluminously dreamy, cheerful and truly endowed with remarkable good taste. It is Electro-Pop that takes subtle but effective Dreampop into its arms, with an organ that makes us take a dip into the glorious attitude of the sixties. We really need to connect to the movements of the clouds in search of a kiss....

Los Angeles has no restraint: one can only love it, at least musically speaking, as it is always able to amaze, to be generous and capable of continuous seduction.

Take this band, listen to the song: you will fly into the infinity of the sky with open eyes, watching the clouds melt, you will touch tender rays of sunshine with this sonic grace, between the brilliance of a subtle and elegant Shoegaze, the vapours of a Post-Punk that will do no harm, on the contrary, and instants of graceful and sublime Dreampop, with the singing perfecting the whole. 

A lunar act, perfect synthesis of an immense capacity to transport you (cancelling all gravity) around the sky, in a time that suspends the seasons. Pain appears in the lyrics, but it does not affect, it allows for deep reflection, but the music seems to caress the skin, to comfort, becoming an absolutely perfect song to make us blissful souls...

Los Angeles non ha ritegno: la si può solo amare, almeno musicalmente parlando, in quanto sempre in grado di stupire, di essere generosa e capace di seduzioni continue.

Prendete questa band, ascoltate il brano: volerete nell’infinità del cielo a occhi aperti, vedendo le nuvole sciogliersi, toccherete teneri raggi di sole con questa grazia sonica, tra il brillio di un sottile ed elegante Shoegaze, i vapori di un Post-Punk che non faranno male, anzi, e istanti di Dreampop leggiadro e sublime, con il cantato a perfezionare il tutto. 

Un atto lunare, sintesi perfetta di una capacità immensa di trasportarvi (annullando ogni gravità) in giro per il cielo, in un tempo che sospende le stagioni. Il dolore appare nel testo, che però non influisce, permette una profonda riflessione, ma la musica sembra accarezzargli la pelle, confortarlo, divenendo una canzone assolutamente perfetta per fare di noi anime beate…

Impossible Tymes - Popadelic

Dreamy Greece, far removed from poverty and the drudgery of living, rises from the ground and dives into miraculous songs, pulsating with life impossible to sustain and therefore fascinating and mysterious. The band gives the title to this compilation by reusing the title of their second Ep (now unobtainable) and inserts three covers that will leave many souls stunned. Shrugging off mistrust and perplexity, given their place of origin, the Impossible Tymes approach it all with the right amount of mistrust and throw themselves into the mix of Dreampop, Seventies psychedelia and even the most surprising Indie pop.

Released by SHELFLIFE Records, always careful to give prominence to voices that want to paint musical poetry, here these 12 tracks will make you spend a few minutes of magnetic dance without frills, you will be enveloped by the magic and the subtle feeling that in the 90s there were those who made music a serious and concrete game, to create a Pop that had a meaning still unexplored.

 Impossible Tymes - Popadelic

La Grecia sognante e distante dalla povertà, dalla fatica del vivere si alza dal terreno e si tuffa in canzoni miracolose, pulsanti di vita impossibile da sostenere e quindi affascinanti e misteriose. La band dà il titolo a questa compilation riutilizzando quello del loro secondo Ep (introvabile ormai) e inserisce tre cover che lasceranno di stucco molte anime. Sciogliendo diffidenza e perplessità, visto il luogo di provenienza, gli Impossible Tymes affrontano il tutto con la giusta dose di menefreghismo e si gettano nella miscela del Dreampop, della Psichedelia anni Settanta, sino all’Indie pop più sorprendente.

Pubblicata dalla SHELFLIFE Records, sempre attenta a dare risalto alle voci che vogliono dipingere poesia musicale, ecco che queste 12 tracce vi faranno passare qualche minuto di magnetica danza senza fronzoli, sarete avvolti dalla magia e dalla sottile sensazione che negli anni ’90 c’era chi faceva della musica un gioco serio e concreto, per creare un Pop che avesse un significato ancora inesplorato.

My Review: Lauds - Imitation Life

 Lauds - Imitation Life

There are five of them, they come from North Carolina and have just released a fresh, positive LP that entertains as music can: giving wings and smiles.

Four songs were present in the previous Ep of this band that is able to illuminate Dreampop with a light that smells of a stratospheric but repeatable past, indeed, improvable, through these dreamy dynamics, often running, to run into beauty.

The lightness comes from James McKay Glasgow's singing, his keyboards and guitars still his and J Holt Evans III's.

Everything glides with this whirlwind that touches the skin, the American boys skim poetry that does not darken, even if in their songwriting the lyrics sometimes reveal a profound observation of important themes. But they do so with grace, respect, leaving our feathers clean and content. With them, time remains alive, through hatchings that seem to erase wrinkles and restore positivity. An album that excites, conquers, makes us feel privileged to exist. 

What is extraordinary in these ten compositions is that every part of the world can feel represented, because of the need for them to be a continuous embrace that belongs to everyone...

La mia Recensione: Lauds - Imitation Life

 Lauds - Imitation Life

Sono in cinque, arrivano dalla Carolina del Nord e hanno appena pubblicato un Lp fresco, positivo, che sa divertire come la musica sa fare: donando ali e sorrisi.

Quattro canzoni erano presenti nei precedenti Ep di questa band che è in grado di illuminare il Dreampop di una luce che profuma di un passato stratosferico ma ripetibile, anzi, migliorabile, attraverso queste dinamiche sognanti, spesso di corsa, per correre dentro la bellezza.

La leggerezza arriva dal cantato di James McKay Glasgow, dalle sue tastiere e dalle chitarre ancora sue e di J Holt Evans III.

Tutto scivola con questa girandola che tocca la pelle, i ragazzi americani sfiorano la poesia che non incupisce, anche se nel loro songwriting i testi alcune volte rivelano una profonda osservazione di tematiche importanti. Ma lo fanno con grazia, rispetto, lasciando le nostre piume pulite e contente. Con loro il tempo rimane vivo, attraverso tratteggi che sembrano cancellare le rughe e restituire positività. Un album che emoziona, conquista, ci fa sentire privilegiati del nostro esistere. 

Ciò che è straordinario in queste dieci composizioni è che ogni parte del mondo si può sentire rappresentato, per il bisogno che siano un abbraccio continuo che appartenga a tutti…

My Review: Molly - Picturesque

The first sweet tears of the new year come up from the stereo and kiss the old scribe: the creators of this unshakeable joy are Molly, the band from Innsbruck who, even though there are only six songs, release an album (it has all the trappings), which, besides being extremely moving, perfectly defines their reality, musical citizens free to range, to probe, to experiment, to be gazelles with dreams in their hooves, taking flight towards the beautiful Austrian mountains. How meticulous is the production, how perfect is the order of the tracks but, above all, how clear is the sky they show us.

Lars Andersson and his trusted stablemate Phillip Dornauer have no intention of repeating the good previous work entitled All That Ever Could Have Been and have composed an even better one: having abandoned the Shoegaze identity, everything here becomes rarefied, with Post-Rock sticking to the most refined Dreampop and far from the old clichés.  One can daydream and understand the density of the sounds, torches with no need for high voltage to shed light on our dreamlike moments. One weeps because the intensity achieved by the duo is an artistic gift of boundless capacity, as they are not even capable of holding back the fluidity of jewellery in search of a home. They find it in our eyes, while the Progressive spirit (no, they don't make this kind of music) leads the roots of Shoegaze to absent themselves quite a bit to play the game with ingenious touches of notes in serene taste and not biting our bellies with continuous rumblings. Le prime lacrime dolcissime del nuovo anno, salgono dallo stereo e baciano il vecchio scriba: gli artefici di questa incrollabile gioia sono i Molly, la band di Innsbruck che, anche se sono sei le canzoni, pubblica un album (ne ha tutti i crismi), che oltre a emozionare tantissimo definisce perfettamente la loro realtà, cittadini musicali liberi di spaziare, di sondare, di sperimentare, di essere gazzelle con i sogni negli zoccoli, spiccando il volo verso le bellissime montagne austriache. Come è meticolosa la produzione, come è perfetto l’ordine dei brani ma, soprattutto, come è limpido il cielo che ci fanno vedere.

Lars Andersson e il fido compagno di scuderia  Phillip Dornauer non hanno intenzione di ripetere il buon lavoro precedente intitolato All That Ever Could Have Been e ne compongono uno ancora migliore: abbandonata l’identità Shoegaze, qui tutto si fa rarefatto, con il Post-Rock appiccicato al Dreampop più raffinato e lontano dai vecchi cliché.  Si può sognare a occhi aperti e capire la densità dei suoni, torce senza bisogno in alto voltaggio per fare luce nei nostri momenti onirici. Si piange perché l’intensità raggiunta dal duo è un regalo artistico di smisurata capacità, non essendo nemmeno loro capaci di trattenere la fluidità di gioielli in cerca di una abitazione. La trovano nei nostri occhi, mentre lo spirito Progressive (no, non fanno questo genere musicale) conduce le radici dello Shoegaze ad assentarsi parecchio per giocare la partita con tocchi geniali di note in assaggio sereno e non mordendo la nostra pancia con fragori continui. Toccante e Perfetto…

La mia Recensione: Oceans - Dreamers in Dark Cities

 Oceans - Dreamers in Dark Cities 

Quante volte si viaggia nella stessa località? E se si ritorna è perché ci è piaciuta davvero molto.

Ora ripetere un viaggio a Melbourne significa prendere residenza lì,  in quanto ci si vuole inebriare delle strade dove si immagina vivano le presenze sottili e incantevoli che hanno generato l’album di esordio degli Oceans, ambasciatori di un verbo solo: nutrimento all’insegna di una bellezza che ha radici nella consapevolezza esplorativa delle coscienze. Si rimane impressionati, stregati da una maturità che è sparsa in tutte le tracce, con le polveri dei sogni che vengono scodellate una ad una nella nostra intimità.

Quando un sogno trova il suono bussa sicuramente alla porta della nostra coscienza con la leggerezza degli Oceans, in una passeggiata con un saggio uso di modalità che hanno come strumenti il gambo solido dello Shoegaze, il Gineceo e l’Androceo (la parte femminile e maschile del fiore) all’interno del Dreampop, nel gioco incantevole di colori vivaci, tenui, sempre comunque splendenti. Un album coraggioso, vero, che sonda la realtà e annienta la crudeltà con incantevoli voli melodici, facendo di questi due principali generi musicali un viaggio psichedelico, con corpose dosi di alveari pieni di nettare per un ascolto che diventa un pasto completo per la nostra anima. Certo, siamo in presenza di riverberi, di distorsioni e di feedback, ma tutto incredibilmente miscelato per donare prima di tutto la fisicità del sogno e non solo una dimensione musicale. Ci troviamo a vivere il pathos in un ascolto che produce vibrazioni e dipendenze affettive, uno slancio verso il vuoto senza aver paura. Tutto si svolge senza forzature, con rispetto per i timpani ma con la capacità di suscitare dosi di emozioni elevate. Arpeggi e ritmiche si dividono il palco di questo sogno che dura molto più dei suoi trentacinque minuti: gli effetti rimangono intatti per il resto della giornata, perché prendono residenza nel desiderio di non vederlo morire. Che siano in grado di evolvere o meno la musica è una domanda errata: questi australiani vanno oltre la musica, non separano, non uniscono, lo possono fare perché la bacchetta magica si è appoggiata sul nucleo delle loro canzoni rendendole speciali, magnetiche, distanziandole da quelle delle altre band. È un continuo crescendo che pare essere eseguito da un’orchestra di angeli diretti dal Dio della Musica che ha sicuramente benedetto la formazione e consegnato loro il segreto per far sì che questo album avvolga i nostri cuori. Quando le nuvole non sono cariche di pioggia ma di note che conoscono il modo di essere messaggeri di trame, di storie dove i sentimenti negativi vengono coccolati e abbracciati, ecco che si compie il miracolo di un mondo migliore perché è proprio così: Dreamers in Dark City è la manifesta possibilità di sentire musica diversa. E siamo tutti più belli…

Song by Song

1 - Feels Like You

Ci si affida a una apertura che ci mostra la delicatezza di una chitarra che sembra giocare nell’acqua. Poi la canzone presenta una struttura sognante con oscillazioni Shoegaze, in una carezza sulla pelle che restituisce la sua poesia con un cantato sussurrato che affascina. 

2 - Mike Tysong 

Una corsa che lascia impronte Darkwave iniziali e poi è una ondata Alternative che ammalia, il cantato è un sequestro dei sensi, mentre la chitarra fa sentire a poco a poco di più la sua voce. Il basso e la batteria invece sono compagni di merenda, mangiano il ritmo e fanno da contraltare al cantato che sembra uscito da un lavaggio perfetto in quanto la sua anima, prima timida e poi più risoluta, riempie il cuore.

Davanti alla magia che strega, la dipendenza di un ascolto ripetuto più volte è la garanzia per questo gioiello.

3 - Soft

Può un colpo di vento piangere facendo intenerire? Sì, decisamente. Il synth crea la corrente giusta, le voci e il controcanto sono cellule Shoegaze, mentre la musica viaggia tra la miglior attitudine pop degli anni '80, con la chitarra che è una cantilena dentro il Dreampop gioioso. 

4 - Look Into My Eyes

Una lama circolare apre la canzone: è la chitarra solista che esce da quella ritmica ed eleva il suono verso le nuvole, con la voce che fa l'opposto (almeno inizialmente), volando a quote basse, e poi è un impatto che ci avvolge, in una stratificazione Shoegaze misurata e poi aggressiva, quasi Post-Rock. I vari Stop and Go, la chitarra che rimane protagonista, l'impasto finale a scemare la rendono un altro gioiello di questo album.

5 - Breathless

 Si piange, si sogna, tra controllata irruenza e una delicatezza commovente, per un brano che esercita un potere emozionale enorme, finendo per portarci ad occhi chiusi dentro l'impeto della batteria, i tocchi sapienti del basso, le due voci angeliche e le chitarre, dee delle dinamiche, per un Dreampop lento e accogliente. I sogni possono dormire sicuri...

6 - Pure

La prima canzone dell'album ad essere stata rivelata prima dell'uscita, è la prova che la melodia può viaggiare a una buona velocità non perdendo nulla della sua identità. Lo stato di grazia e le capacità della band continuano a disegnare la lora traiettoria. Prendiamo Pure: come resistere alla tentazione di voler abbracciare la vita? Basta seguire il lavoro del basso che è un canto di per sé e le chitarre che costantemente ribadiscono come le radici del Dreampop rimangono valide. Qui si aggiunge un suono fresco e dinamico.

7 - Apart

Anche gli angeli corrono, senza sudare, lasciando il profumo a volte di una malinconia sostenibile. Accade in questo brano, dove tutto è delicato e irruente, in un sodalizio che comporta grande emozioni. Il drumming, di impostazione Indie, alterna le sue dinamiche sostenuto da un basso locomotiva a vapore, con gli accenni di chitarra prima e poi più presenti per fare di questa canzone un cuscino ritmato, al fine di poter riposare su ogni nuvola.

8  - Lost In The Dark

Note delicate escono dai tasti di un piano, la voce trova le parole per trasmettere i suoi pensieri, mentre la chitarra arriva e si prende singoli suoni per poter trasportare i sogni dentro un Alternative magico: si è in zona anni ’90, sponda Inglese, e quando si arriva al ritornello si può sentire un eco di Slowdive che unisce le due band, sorvolando l'oceano.

9 - Exodus

Si è dentro il vento che bacia la montagna, il clima è autunnale, il pianoforte viene avvolto da attitudini Ambient, la chitarra semiacustica pone la sua voce per pochi attimi e in questa breve traccia vi è tutta l'intensità degli Australiani: gioiello purissimo.

10 - Ashes

Si fugge da una situazione dolorosa con questo ultimo brano, la magia si fa lenta, sognante e rauca, quasi piangente, ma poi tutto entra nel rock australiano che invita lo Shoegaze a fare due passi ed è puro delirio dei sensi, in un traffico emotivo che ci fa piangere ed è il modo perfetto per chiudere questo album, con un grazie fragoroso che uscendo dalle chitarre arriva alla nostra voce...

My Review: Oceans - Dreamers in Dark Cities

 Oceans - Dreamers in Dark Cities  

How many times do you travel to the same location? And if you return it is because you really liked it.

Now repeating a trip to Melbourne means taking up residence there, since you want to inebriate yourself with the streets where you imagine the subtle, enchanting presences that generated Oceans' debut album live, ambassadors of a single verb: nourishment in the name of a beauty rooted in the exploratory awareness of consciousness. One is impressed, bewitched by a maturity that is scattered throughout the tracks, with the dust of dreams being served one by one in our intimacy.

When a dream finds sound, it surely knocks at the door of our consciousness with the lightness of Oceans, in a walk with a wise use of modalities that have as instruments the solid stem of Shoegaze, the Gynecium and the Androecium (the feminine and masculine part of the flower) within Dreampop, in the enchanting play of bright, subdued, always shining colours. A brave, true album that explores reality and annihilates cruelty with charming melodic flights, turning these two main musical genres into a psychedelic journey, with full-bodied doses of nectar-filled hives for a listening experience that becomes a full meal for our soul. Of course, we are in the presence of reverberations, distortions and feedback, but all incredibly mixed to give us first of all the physicality of the dream and not only a musical dimension. We find ourselves experiencing pathos in a listening that produces vibrations and affective dependencies, a rush towards the void without fear. Everything unfolds without forcing, with respect for the eardrums but with the capacity to arouse high doses of emotion. Arpeggios and rhythms share the stage in this dream that lasts much longer than its thirty-five minutes: the effects remain intact for the rest of the day, as they take up residence in the desire not to see it die. Whether or not they are able to evolve music is a wrong question: these Australians go beyond music, they do not separate, they do not unite, they can do it because the magic wand has rested on the core of their songs making them special, magnetic, distancing them from those of other bands. It is a continuous crescendo that seems to be performed by an orchestra of angels directed by the God of Music who has surely blessed the group and given them the secret to making this album envelop our hearts. When the clouds are not laden with rain, but with notes that know how to be messengers of textures, of stories where negative feelings are cuddled and embraced, then the miracle of a better world takes place because that's just how it is: Dreamers in Dark City is the manifest possibility of listening to different music. And we are all more beautiful...

Song by Song

1 - Feels Like You

One relies on an opening that shows us the delicacy of a guitar that seems to play in the water. Then the song presents a dreamy structure with Shoegaze oscillations, in a caress on the skin which gives back its poetry with whispered vocals that fascinate. 

2 - Mike Tysong 

A ride that leaves initial Darkwave imprints and then an Alternative wave that bewitches, vocals are a seizure of the senses, while the guitar gradually makes its voice heard more. The bass and drums, on the other hand, are friends, eating up the rhythm and acting as a counterbalance to singing, which seems to have come out of a perfect wash as its soul, at first shy and then more resolute, fills the heart. 

In the face of bewitching magic, the addiction of repeated listening is the guarantee for this gem.

3 - Soft

Can a gust of wind cry, touching you? Yes, definitely. The synth creates the right current, vocals and backing vocals are Shoegaze cells, while the music travels through the best pop attitude of the 80s, with the guitar being a chant within joyful Dreampop. 

4 - Look Into My Eyes

A circular blade opens the song: it's the lead guitar coming out of the rhythmic one and elevating the sound towards the clouds, with vocals doing the opposite (at least initially), flying at low altitudes, and then it's an impact that envelops us, in a Shoegaze stratification which is measured and then aggressive, almost Post-Rock. The various Stop and Go, the guitar that remains the protagonist, the final fade-out make it another gem of this album.

5 - Breathless

 One cries, one dreams, between controlled impetuosity and a moving delicacy, for a track that exerts an enormous emotional power, ending up taking us eyes closed into the rush of the drums, the skillful touches of the bass, the two angelic voices and the guitars, goddesses of dynamics, for a slow and welcoming Dreampop. Dreams can sleep safely...

6 - Pure

The first song to be revealed before the release of the album, it is proof that melody can travel at a good speed without losing any of its identity. The band's state of grace and skills continue to draw their trajectory. Take Pure: how to resist the temptation to want to embrace life? Just follow the bass work that is a chant in itself and the guitars that constantly reiterate how the roots of Dreampop remain valid. A fresh and dynamic sound is added here.

7 - Apart

Even angels run, without breaking a sweat, leaving the scent of a sustainable melancholy at times. It happens in this track, where everything is delicate and impetuous, in a partnership that brings great emotion. The drumming, in an Indie setting, alternates its dynamics supported by a bass that seems a steam locomotive, with the hints of guitar which later become more present to make this song a rhythmic cushion, in order to rest on every cloud.

8 - Lost In The Dark

Delicate notes come out from the keys of a piano, the voice finds the words to convey its thoughts, while the guitar comes in and takes single sounds to transport dreams into a magical alternative: you are in the 90s zone, in England, and when you get to the refrain you can hear an echo of Slowdive uniting the two bands, flying over the ocean.

9 - Exodus

You are inside the wind that kisses the mountain, the weather is autumnal, the piano is enveloped by Ambient attitudes, the semi-acoustic guitar sets its voice for a few moments and in this short track there is all the intensity of the Australians: pure jewel.

10 - Ashes

We escape from a painful situation with this last song, the magic becomes slow, dreamy and raucous, almost weeping, but then everything enters the Australian rock that invites Shoegaze to take a walk and it is pure delirium of the senses, in an emotional traffic that makes us cry and is the perfect way to close this album, with a thunderous thank you that, coming out of the guitars, reaches our voice…

A volte le nuvole sono pagnotte dal colore diverso e che sanno diventare ottime e succulenti canzoni, come quelle dei Mist Double, una band di Philadelphia capace di farci assaporare anche la più umile delle briciole di questo piatto delizioso che è OUTERSHERE.

Se il Noise può subire un approccio gentile per smussare un po’ certi suoi angoli, allora è lo Shoegaze il solo ad aver il potere di riuscire nell’impresa. 

Il cielo si riempie di gioia: si sono trovate delle sentinelle in grado di governare il rumore e di renderlo poesia (Hollow), si sono creati sentieri sognanti con la spina accesa per illuminare il nostro pianeta (Leaves), giungendo a correre con il sorriso perenne (Around You), con tonnellate di riverberi a fare di noi timpani estasiati.

Entrate tra le braccia di un calore notturno: veloce e sincopato (Spacewalk), sarete sudore sotto un fiume di chitarre inebrianti. Gli anni ’90 hanno creato un genere come lo Shoegaze e molto di tutto quello che è successo in quella decade viene sintetizzato nella magnifica valanga ipnotica di una carezza estiva (Beyond), in cui nell’ascolto si diventa più contenti.

Un EP meraviglioso, incredibile, vitalizzante, che il vecchio scriba raccomanda senza esitazioni…

 Mist Double - OUTERSPHERE

Sometimes the clouds are differently coloured loaves of bread that can become excellent, succulent songs, like those of Mist Double, a Philadelphia band capable of making us savour even the humblest of crumbs of the delicious dish that is OUTERSHERE.

If Noise can take a gentle approach by smoothing out some of its corners, then Shoegaze alone has the power to succeed. 

The sky fills with joy: sentinels have been found that can govern noise and make it poetry (Hollow), dreamy paths have been created with a lighted plug to illuminate our planet (Leaves), running with an everlasting smile (Around You), with tons of reverberations to make us ecstatic.

Enter the arms of nocturnal warmth: fast and syncopated (Spacewalk), you'll be sweating under a river of intoxicating guitars. The 90s created a genre like Shoegaze and much of everything that happened in that decade is summed up in the magnificent hypnotic avalanche of a summer caress (Beyond), where you become happier through listening.

A wonderful, incredible, vitalising EP that the old scribe recommends without hesitation...
