Il vecchio scriba torna nel Kentucky, e nuovamente a Louisville, per l'album di esordio di questo artista che ha confezionato un disco ricco di sfumature, con radici lontane ma imbevute del suo stile che tende a riempire di uno strato di magia che rende a volte difficile capirle: spettacolare già per questo motivo. Le melodie e gli arrangiamenti, puliti e precisi, ci fanno avere la sensazione di essere davanti a un film dove la nostalgia viene sostituita dalla comprensione del passato, un atto di maturità umana ancor prima che artistica. Un album che percorre gli strati della psiche e lo fa spesso partendo da lì, facendosi supportare dalla considerazione della musica degli anni ’70 come la migliore, visto l'elenco infinito di artisti che coniugavano arte-musica-psicologia. L'Alternative che incontra l'Indie rock più tenue è già un miracolo... La sua abilità è quella di creare musica che sembra la pelle di sogni che cercano di essere pescati. Lo fa con pazienza e impegno, con chitarre che sanno essere carezze e con un uso sapiente di ritmi lenti ma mai noiosi. Lento ma veloce ad entrare nel cuore…

Dear old scribe where are you taking us to this time? To the city of Dexter, the famous serial killer, because the album I'm telling you about somehow kills the approximate stylistic injustice in that Nina Belief, an absolute superstar, is no joke, she is not imprecise, she is quite the opposite, because of her unquestionable will and means to give all the genres she considers and plays the right place. The scenario is crazy, an encyclopaedia, a history of well-blended sounds, a path within the dictates that she respects.

A long list then of electronics with its gills, a swimming in the motions of possibility to form a circuit that compacts four decades and bodes well for the future.

Her synths are needles, finger pressures in our ears, a lysergic journey where 'plastic' music is one of the expressions, but consider also her lyrics, her voice, and you have a picture of Picasso melting to contaminate transistors eager for electric/emotional shocks.  One dances but with a swollen head, sweaty thoughts, as she dutifully beats the cages of our imprisoned daily condition. The melodies are short but intense, capable of flexing the lips in a sweet smile. It seems inevitable to think that the greatest gift this album gives us is to silence the belief that even electronics are now greasy with wear and tear: Nina revitalises everything and with dry but real tears offers us continuous magic, within the 18 musical quivers that make this work the new Mecca of synths.

Caro vecchio scriba dove ci porti questa volta? Nella città di Dexter, il famoso serial killer, perché l’album di cui vi parla in qualche modo uccide l’ingiustizia stilistica approssimativa in quanto Nina Belief, fuoriclasse assoluta, non scherza, non è imprecisa, è tutto l’opposto, per la sua indiscutibile volontà e mezzi a disposizione per conferire a tutti i generi da lei considerati e suonati la giusta collocazione. Lo scenario è pazzesco, una enciclopedia, una storia dei suoni ben amalgamati, un percorso dentro i dettami che lei rispetta.

Un elenco lungo quindi di elettronica con le sue branchie, un nuotare dentro i moti di possibilità per formare un circuito che compatta quattro decadi e ci fa ben sperare per il futuro.

I suoi Synth sono aghi, pressioni delle dita nelle nostre orecchie, un viaggio lisergico dove la  musica di “plastica” è una delle espressioni, ma considerate anche i suoi testi, la sua voce, e avrete un quadro di picasso che si scioglie per contaminare i transistor desiderosi di scosse elettriche/emozionali.  Si danza ma avendo la testa gonfia, i pensieri sudati, mentre lei picchia con rispetto le gabbie della nostra imprigionata condizione giornaliera. Le melodie sono brevi ma intense, capaci di far flettere le labbra in un dolce sorriso. Pare inevitabile pensare che il regalo più grande che ci fa questo album è quello di silenziare le convinzioni che anche l’elettronica sia ormai unta di logorio: Nina rivitalizza tutto e con lacrime asciutte ma reali ci offre una magia continua, dentro i 18 fremiti musicali che fanno di questo lavoro la nuova Mecca dei synth.

 In a Lonely Place - Reflection

The old scribe never lacks the urge to take a few steps into the Muscovite universe, the European capital of Post-Punk, the one that knows how to detach itself from its origins in order to sweep through blood-red clouds stained with grey.

Such is the case with Mikhail Omelchuck: the sole member of this stellar project, a spokesman for oblique flashes, bass strokes like sabre-rattling, dry drumming, his voice like a diamond falling on skin. Reflection is an electric splinter without peace, because the guitar that enters at a certain point splits the sky: on one side the 80s Darkwave bowing helplessly and on the other his own, wielded like a dagger that cuts and leaves, without any care to look at the effect created. Toxic, perverse, hypnotic and chaotic, the song is gothically addictive, the smile tilts to the floor and you dance like terrified but healthy ants: long live Mikhail!

Al vecchio scriba non manca mai la voglia di fare due passi dentro l’universo Moscovita, capitale europea del Post-Punk, quello che sa distaccarsi dalle origini per poter spaziare dentro nuvole rosso sangue macchiate di grigio.

È il caso di Mikhail Omelchuck: unico membro di questo progetto stellare, portavoce di bagliori obliqui, colpi di basso come sciabolate, drumming secco, la voce come un diamante che cade sulla pelle. Reflection è una scheggia elettrica senza pace, perchè la chitarra che entra a un certo punto spacca il cielo: da una parte la Darkwave degli anni ’80 che si inchina impotente e dall’altra la sua, impugnata come un pugnale che taglia e se ne va, senza alcuna premura di guardare l’effetto creato. Tossica, perversa, ipnotica e caotica, la canzone crea dipendenza gotica, il sorriso si inclina verso il pavimento e si danza come formiche atterrite ma in buona salute: lunga vita Mikhail!

Who can argue that there is no beauty in the underground, in things forgotten, obstructed, covered up by the new that advances inexorably?

In the San Francisco Bay Area in 2010, The Liar Script formed, so devoted to European art forms, especially British ones, and began to play, to compose new songs with the healthy pleasure of staying in touch with those sounds and modes of expression. They did not deny themselves their most coveted task: to find their own style, something recognisable, aware of the difficulty given by the obvious amount of references that run through their songs. But they have succeeded, this is evident in the EP that Old Scribe has decided to reissue, seven years after its release.

The three sombre jewels are an exposition of two musical genres that are related, but have been struggling to get along lately: jealousies are inherent in the human soul. In doing so, immense possibilities for development are lost. The San Francisco band does not fail, however, and puts forth a sublime crossbreed of Post-Punk and Darkwave, with the opening track All My Frustration being a sombre dance, the intersection of tensions and lacerations rent in the scratchy bass and syncopated drumming.

With Lesser Men we enter the slow abyss of defeat, between murky guitars and a bass that sounds like a crocodile waiting to maul a gazelle. The vocals are like a weeping willow on a winter's day, and the will to live, now gone to the wastebasket of rejected things, crouches in this skin-tearing darkwave expression.

The last episode is titled The Silent Room and the echoes of the eighties advance, confusing, tossing us on the bed with the pleasure of a slow, perfect, enchanted, necessary anguish.

A work that confirms that there is delicious nectar in the bottom of bottles: take three sips, one for each track, and enjoy this little unknown miracle...

La mia Recensione: The Liar Script - Lesser Men

Chi può sostenere che non esiste bellezza nel sommerso, nelle cose dimenticate, ostacolate, coperte dal nuovo che avanza in modo inesorabile?

Nella Baia di San Francisco nel 2010 si formarono i The Liar Script, così devoti alle forme artistiche europee, specialmente quelle Britanniche, e incominciarono a suonare, a comporre brani nuovi con il piacere sano di rimanere in contatto con quelle sonorità e modalità di espressione. Non negando a loro stessi il compito più ambito: trovare il loro stile, un qualcosa di riconoscibile, consapevoli della difficoltà data la mole evidente di richiami che attraversano le loro canzoni. Ma ci sono riusciti, questo è evidente nell’EP che il vecchio scriba ha deciso di riproporre, sette anni dopo la sua uscita.

I tre cupi gioielli sono l’esposizione di due generi musicali imparentati, ma che ultimamente faticano ad andare d’accordo: le gelosie sono insite nell’animo umano. Così facendo si perdono possibilità immense di sviluppo. La band di San Francisco però non fallisce e mette in campo un incrocio sublime di Post-Punk e Darkwave, con l’iniziale All My Frustration che è una danza cupa, l’incrocio di tensioni e lacerazioni che prendono affitto nel basso graffiato e nel drumming sincopato.

Con Lesser Men si entra nel baratro lento della sconfitta, tra chitarre torbide e il basso che sembra un coccodrillo in attesa di sbranare una gazzella. Il cantato è un salice piangente in un giorno d’inverno e la voglia di vivere, ormai andata nel cestino delle cose rifiutate, si accuccia in questa espressione Darkwave che lacera la pelle.

L’ultimo episodio si intitola The Silent Room e gli echi degli anni Ottanta avanzano, confondono, sbattendoci sul letto con il piacere di un’angoscia lenta, perfetta, incantata, necessaria.

Un lavoro che conferma che vi è del nettare prelibato nel fondo delle bottiglie: fate tre sorsi, uno per ogni brano, e gustatevi questo piccolo miracolo sconosciuto…
