Fall Shock - Interior

The skilful French label Manic Depression brought this Italian band, formed by Francesco Kay and Markus O, three years ago. Given the backgrounds of the two, so different and apparently so distant, they have produced a capacious, solid album, precise in terms of references and performance methods. They play like a marvel, traversing an important decade (that of the 80s), paying respect to it through research that allows them to add something of their own, to be able to compose songs that are not too gloomy and mannered. In short: the result is an excellent historical compromise that generates a pleasant, gracefully slippery listen, making us spend forty minutes with our heads in the memories, the stimuli of a present to be written and lived, and their hinted Post-Punk, steeped in Synthpop and Synthwave, that knows how to make us dance without having too many thoughts in our heads.

La sapiente Label francese Manic Depression ha portato con sé tre anni fa questa band italiana, formata da Francesco Kay e da Markus O, dando vita, visti i background dei due così diversi e apparentemente lontanissimi, a un album capiente, sodo, preciso per riferimenti e modalità esecutive. Suonano che è una meraviglia, attraversano un decennio importante (quello degli anni '80), tributandogli rispetto attraverso una ricerca che consente di aggiungere qualcosa di proprio, per poter comporre brani che non siano troppo cupi e di maniera. Insomma: il risultato è un ottimo compromesso storico che genera un ascolto piacevole, scivoloso con grazia, facendoci passare quaranta minuti con la testa dentro i ricordi, gli stimoli di un presente da scrivere e da vivere, e il loro Post-Punk accennato, intriso di Synthpop e Synthwave, che sa farci ballare senza avere troppi pensieri per la testa.

Systeme Paradoxe - Histoires Ordinaires

The world heats up while souls cool down, and in this play of forces something has to intervene, to bring this silent struggle to a halt. The Parisian duo Systeme Paradoxe does this very well, with songs that know how to use shrewdness, tension, dilating and compressing reflections on waves full of icy Coldwave drops, to witness dialogue that has become stale and ineffective. Harsh notes, swinging rhythms and the voice that becomes a shiver that throws flames inside the hardened crystals of our thinking, a boiling of feelings that scream in a low voice.

In a few but impeccable minutes: their class protects and frustrates our absent mental flow, offering miles of quality. Their lyrics and music are a slap in the face, elegant and disturbing, a making clear of our decline, with tears flowing out of our footsteps. The two of them, during Rouge, become a Kurosawa film, slow and abysmal, crushing the mind towards a mental thread of awareness, with electronics accompanying an artistic attitude devoted to decadence, the day after the end...

The most mysterious Kraftwerk appears during Zero Zero, an articulate mass, where the reading of Holy Scripture is confined within the recitative of a voice metabolised in the clearest sadness.

All the compositions seem to overlook and end in a landslide: all subtly subtle, but with the knowledge that no smile will be offered...

 Systeme Paradoxe - Histoires Ordinaires

Il mondo si surriscalda mentre le anime si raffreddano, e in questo gioco di forze qualcosa deve intervenire, per far scemare questa lotta silenziosa. Lo fa benissimo il duo Parigino Systeme Paradoxe, con canzoni che sanno adoperare accortezza, tensione, dilatando e comprimendo le riflessioni su onde piene di gelide gocce Coldwave, per testimoniare il dialogo che si è fatto stantio e inefficace. Note grevi, ritmi che oscillano e la voce che diventa un brivido che lancia fiamme dentro i cristalli induriti del nostro pensare, una ebollizione di sentimenti che urlano a bassa voce.

Sono pochi ma impeccabili minuti: la loro classe protegge e frustra il nostro flusso mentale assente, offrendo chilometri di qualità. I loro testi e la loro musica sono uno schiaffo, elegante e conturbante, un rendere chiaro il nostro declino, con le lacrime che escono fuori dai nostri passi. I due, durante Rouge, diventano un film di Kurosawa, lenti e abissali, schiacciando la mente verso un filo mentale che si accende di consapevolezza, con l’elettronica che accompagna un atteggiamento artistico votato alla decadenza, il giorno dopo la fine…

I Kraftwerk più misteriosi appaiono durante Zero Zero, una messa articolata, dove la lettura della Sacra Scrittura è confinata dentro il recitativo di una voce metabolizzata nella tristezza più limpida.

Tutte le composizioni sembrano affacciarsi per finire in uno smottamento: tutto raffinatamente sottile, ma con la consapevolezza che nessun sorriso sarà offerto…

 Her Absence Fill the World - Neon Arabesque

È tempo di dare uno sguardo alla Cultura che esala i suoi ultimi respiri, che non riesce più a girare il mondo seminando se stessa nelle menti sempre più atrofizzare dal consumismo e dalla fretta di possedere il nulla pensandolo e vive solamente come fosse il tutto che certifica il senso delle esistenze. Per farlo adoperiamo un’opera tematica che sa coinvolgere anche per la modalità espressiva di incursioni perfettamente riuscite di generi musicali all’interno di quella elettronica che riesce ad essere efficace come un tempo lo fu il rock. Una coppia residente a Berlino si prende l’onere di mostrare una progettualità che conduce l’ascoltatore ad avere elementi per tornare ad abitare la coscienza. Si danza (chi può negare che si possa riflettere con il corpo in movimento) con viaggi sperimentali di Dark Electro e Synthwave sino alle porte di frammenti Ebm, che rendono più massicci i concetti e le elaborazioni espresse. Synth come frane di neve che cerca il ghiaccio ma trova il calore, finendo a valle del nostro pensiero: è poesia malinconica questo Ep, in una triste giornata di sole. Una delle voci più espressive degli ultimi anni, un’aquila nera scesa in città per affettare con il suo canto la nostra pelle e afferrare i nostri cuori, capace di planare sul registro basso con grazia e sensualità, per poi spiccare il volo su quello alto, lasciando nella sua scia lacrime che escono da esercizi elettronici che sono uno sballo nel quale perdersi per ritrovare la lucidità. L’Ep mostra i muscoli, sempre però con quella volontà di concedere al movimento corporeo confini di accesso, per non conoscere troppo la tristezza. Tra i lavori più ammalianti del 2022, Neon Arabesque è destinato a rimanere una pillola che non si scioglierà, ma continuerà ad avere una grande solidità dentro chi lo ascolterà con attenzione.

 Her Absence Fill the World - Neon Arabesque

It's time to take a look at a Culture that is breathing its last breaths, a culture that can no longer go around the world sowing itself in minds which are increasingly atrophied by consumerism and the haste to possess nothingness and lives as if only it were the whole that certifies the meaning of existences. To do this, we use a thematic work which is also able to involve the expressive mode of perfectly successful incursions of musical genres within that electronic music that manages to be as effective as rock once was. A couple living in Berlin assume the responsibility of showing a projectuality that leads the listener to have elements to inhabit consciousness again. They dance (who can deny that one can think with the body in motion) with experimental journeys of Dark Electro and Synthwave up to the gates of Ebm fragments, which make the concepts and elaborations expressed more massive. Synths like landslides of snow searching for ice but finding warmth, ending up in the valley of our thoughts: this Ep is melancholic poetry, on a sad sunny day. One of the most expressive voices of the last few years, a black eagle descended to the city to slice our skin with its singing and to grab our hearts, capable of gliding on the low register with grace and sensuality, then taking flight on the high one, leaving in its wake tears that come out of electronic exercises which are a trip in which we lose oneself in order to regain lucidity. The Ep shows its muscles, but always with that willingness to grant bodily movement access boundaries, so as not to know too much sadness. Among the most fascinating works of 2022, Neon Arabesque is destined to remain a pill that will not dissolve, but will continue to have a great solidity within those who listen to it carefully.

 Xenia Beliayeva - Words

Yes, the old scribe does not leave Hamburg, but believe me he is not wrong, because listening to Xenia Beliayeva's single is a delirium that everyone should experience.

Her voice, with a vocal that is a scratch of salt amidst the indecisive sun rays of the German city, is what can shake us and make us understand perfectly how Synth can colour communication with words that precede the actual words, which here offer an essay of her skills as a visionary in search of a place to take our fears. These lexical expressions are the next step to complete the intention of having her in our listening, dancing in the desire to finally understand what fabric these syllables we surround and feed on are made of. A song that bewitches and frightens, making it perfect and full of toned and swaggering muscles. All under the banner of a perfect production (in Germany we don't joke, never, we have only to learn from this Mother Nation of Sound and Professionalism), which allows the stylistic factory of Synthwave, Industrial-Techno, Synthpop to let the blood flow contentedly to intoxicate our legs with a dance that is light in appearance...

Xenia Beliayeva - Words

Ebbene sì, il vecchio scriba non si stacca da Amburgo, ma credetemi non sbaglia, perché ascoltare il singolo di Xenia Beliayeva è un delirio che tutti dovrebbero vivere.

La sua voce, con il cantato che è un graffio di sale in mezzo ai raggi solari indecisi della città tedesca, è ciò che può scuoterci e farci intendere perfettamente come i Synth possano colorare la comunicazione con parole che precedono quelle vere e proprie, che qui offrono un saggio delle sue doti di visionaria in cerca di un luogo dove portare le nostre paure. Queste espressioni lessicali sono il passo successivo per completare l’intenzione di averla nei nostri ascolti, danzando nel desiderio di capire finalmente di che tessuto siano composte queste sillabe di cui ci circondiamo e cibiamo. Una canzone che ammalia e spaventa, rendendola perfetta e piena di muscoli tonici e spavaldi. Tutto all’insegna di una produzione perfetta (in Germania non si scherza, mai, abbiamo solo da imparare da questa Nazione Madre del Suono e della Professionalità), che consente di far  scorrere  nella fabbrica stilistica di Synthwave, Industrial-Techno, Synthpop il sangue contento di intossicarci le gambe con una danza leggera in apparenza…

Some beginnings are better than others: listen to this, a single that envelops, confirming that Colorado is perhaps the most interesting region of the world in terms of its ability to make the Darkwave a safe harbour but with new perspectives, new boats and new passengers, as if the sea needed clean air. And so Synthwave is handed the access codes inside that genre of music that is now extinct and besieged by young bands that do nothing but repeat what the old ones used to do. Pur It On is worth studying, trust what it shows, be snails with a magnifying glass, well cleaned, and you will find within it shreds of new light while the grey coughs with joy...

Certi esordi sono meglio di altri: ascoltate questo, un singolo che avvolge, ci conferma che il Colorado è la regione del mondo forse più interessante dal punto di vista della capacità di rendere la Darkwave un porto sicuro ma con nuove prospettive, nuove barche e nuovi passeggeri, come se il mare avesse bisogno di aria pulita. E allora alla Synthwave vengono consegnati i codici di accesso dentro quel genere musicale ormai spento e assediato da giovani band che non sanno far altro che ripetere ciò che facevano quelle vecchie. Pur It On è da studiare, fidatevi di ciò che mostra, siate lumache con la lente di ingrandimento, ben pulita, e troverete al suo interno brandelli di luce nuova mentre il grigio tossisce di gioia…

Take an American from Oakland and bring him to Berlin: something intriguing is bound to happen, come on, let's not kid ourselves, two great acts cohabiting is good news.

Two singles and two Ep's later we find ourselves talking about the third Ep, Held a Fragment of the Moon, which is a satanic Synthwave monolith, biting and not fleeing, residing in its electronic programs, hurling itself into the Darkwave with delightful lightness, while the rhythms pulsate and you are transported into the stiletto heels of the dancing night. Refined, generous, romantic, but always rhythmic, the songs on the Ep are an imaginative portal to what has happened and is happening in those musical territories. Just as a book of poetry placed in the sand remains so, so does this work: however much you deny it, it will emerge...

Prendi un Americano di Oakland e portalo a Berlino: qualcosa di intrigante succederà di sicuro, dai, non scherziamo, due grandi realtà che coabitano è una bella notizia.

Due singoli e due Ep dopo ci troviamo a parlare del terzo Ep, Held a Fragment of the Moon, che è un monolite Synthwave satanico, morde e non fugge, risiede nei suoi programmi elettronici, si scaglia dentro la Darkwave con deliziosa leggerezza, mentre i ritmi pulsano e si viene trasportati nei tacchi a spillo della notte danzante. Raffinate, generose, romantiche, ma sempre ritmiche, le canzoni dell'Ep sono un portale immaginifico dove raccogliere informazioni su cosa è accaduto e accade in quei territori musicali. Così come un libro di poesia messo sotto la sabbia rimane tale, ciò accade anche per questo lavoro: per quanto lo neghiate emergerà...

Dear old scribe where are you taking us to this time? To the city of Dexter, the famous serial killer, because the album I'm telling you about somehow kills the approximate stylistic injustice in that Nina Belief, an absolute superstar, is no joke, she is not imprecise, she is quite the opposite, because of her unquestionable will and means to give all the genres she considers and plays the right place. The scenario is crazy, an encyclopaedia, a history of well-blended sounds, a path within the dictates that she respects.

A long list then of electronics with its gills, a swimming in the motions of possibility to form a circuit that compacts four decades and bodes well for the future.

Her synths are needles, finger pressures in our ears, a lysergic journey where 'plastic' music is one of the expressions, but consider also her lyrics, her voice, and you have a picture of Picasso melting to contaminate transistors eager for electric/emotional shocks.  One dances but with a swollen head, sweaty thoughts, as she dutifully beats the cages of our imprisoned daily condition. The melodies are short but intense, capable of flexing the lips in a sweet smile. It seems inevitable to think that the greatest gift this album gives us is to silence the belief that even electronics are now greasy with wear and tear: Nina revitalises everything and with dry but real tears offers us continuous magic, within the 18 musical quivers that make this work the new Mecca of synths.

Caro vecchio scriba dove ci porti questa volta? Nella città di Dexter, il famoso serial killer, perché l’album di cui vi parla in qualche modo uccide l’ingiustizia stilistica approssimativa in quanto Nina Belief, fuoriclasse assoluta, non scherza, non è imprecisa, è tutto l’opposto, per la sua indiscutibile volontà e mezzi a disposizione per conferire a tutti i generi da lei considerati e suonati la giusta collocazione. Lo scenario è pazzesco, una enciclopedia, una storia dei suoni ben amalgamati, un percorso dentro i dettami che lei rispetta.

Un elenco lungo quindi di elettronica con le sue branchie, un nuotare dentro i moti di possibilità per formare un circuito che compatta quattro decadi e ci fa ben sperare per il futuro.

I suoi Synth sono aghi, pressioni delle dita nelle nostre orecchie, un viaggio lisergico dove la  musica di “plastica” è una delle espressioni, ma considerate anche i suoi testi, la sua voce, e avrete un quadro di picasso che si scioglie per contaminare i transistor desiderosi di scosse elettriche/emozionali.  Si danza ma avendo la testa gonfia, i pensieri sudati, mentre lei picchia con rispetto le gabbie della nostra imprigionata condizione giornaliera. Le melodie sono brevi ma intense, capaci di far flettere le labbra in un dolce sorriso. Pare inevitabile pensare che il regalo più grande che ci fa questo album è quello di silenziare le convinzioni che anche l’elettronica sia ormai unta di logorio: Nina rivitalizza tutto e con lacrime asciutte ma reali ci offre una magia continua, dentro i 18 fremiti musicali che fanno di questo lavoro la nuova Mecca dei synth.

 Order 89 - Future

Bordeaux: quella donna di classe che nasconde il passato e rivela il futuro. Per farlo bussa alla qualità di una band dirompente come gli Order 89, quartetto che getta spranghe di Postpunk sul terreno fertile all’accoglienza di quella straordinaria parte che viene definita synthwave. Però: siamo sicuri che non vi siano impronte Coldwave a rendere questa canzone speciale e trascinante? Esiste una modalità elettronica che bussa con timidezza e investe l’ascolto con oscillazioni e fiammate per dare, come risultato, una orchidea che si conficca nella mente: le bastano pochi elementi per farlo, riuscendoci benissimo.

Dopo una introduzione che sembra sospendere il respiro e inquinare l’aria di una tensione sublime, quando arriva il cantato tutto si dilata e non c’è scampo: è annessione completa in questa danza robotica, dai lineamenti corporei francesi e l’anima più estrema appartenente a quella Germania che sa mettere le sue impronte ovunque. Totalmente raccomandato l’ascolto e consigliata la fruizione.

My Review: Order 89 - Future

 Order 89 - Future

Bordeaux: that classy lady who hides the past and reveals the future. To do so, it knocks on the quality of a disruptive band like Order 89, a quartet that throws bars of Postpunk on the fertile ground for the reception of that extraordinary part that is defined as synthwave. But: are we sure there are no Coldwave imprints that make this song special and enthralling? There is an electronic mode that knocks with shyness and invests the listener with oscillations and flashes to give, as a result, an orchid that sticks in the mind: it needs only a few elements to do this, and succeeds very well.

After an introduction that seems to suspend the breath and pollute the air with a sublime tension, the singing arrives with everything dilated and there is no escape: it is complete annexation in this robotic dance, with French bodily features and the most extreme soul belonging to that Germany that knows how to put its fingerprints everywhere. Totally recommended to listen to and enjoy.

What have we got, old scribe?
A Russian and a Frenchman: Anton Berezin and Jordi, from St Petersburg and Paris, in a project called Otchim, now in its fourth work, the second for the prestigious Label Sierpien Records.
Seven hypnotic souls encircle us between Kraftwerk, Robots, D.A.F. and more, for a temporal journey that lands at the end of the 1970s and starts again at the end of 1983. Everything is there, deposited, certified.
But then a sprinkling of contemporaneity is needed, and the duo inserts it perfectly, like splinterless cylinders, with unquestionable precision.
First of all, the soul: Post-Punk, but without overt displays, because it is kept hidden, inside notes on which electronic attitudes are placed, in which Coldwave and Synthwave play the game, in a splendid draw.
Their undoubted ability is to bring dance into a conscious space, where utility cannot be stopped by fun. Here, then, the seriousness of this record consists of microchips activated to make us become thoughts hired by them to find physicality. A miracle, and it is worth emphasising this. Jordi's singing in French offers romantic feather cells that cannot be deprived of Anton's Sarmatian bassoman, in which he lives the discipline and rigidity that blocks the music beautifully, not allowing it too much sentimentality.

Simply a dutiful and enjoyable album awaits you: don't hesitate...

 Otchim - Reves Brisees

Cosa abbiamo, vecchio scriba?

Un russo e un francese: Anton Berezin e Jordi , da San Pietroburgo e da Parigi, in un progetto chiamato Otchim, giunti al quarto lavoro, il secondo per la prestigiosa Label Sierpien Records.

Sette ipnotiche anime ci accerchiano tra Kraftwerk, Robots, D.A.F. e molto altro, per un viaggio temporale che atterra alla fine degli anni ’70 per ripartire alla fine del 1983. Tutto è lì, depositato, certificato.

Poi occorre però una spruzzata di contemporaneità e il duo la inserisce perfettamente, come cilindri senza schegge, con precisione indiscutibile.

Prima di tutto l'anima: Post-Punk, ma senza esibizioni evidenti, perché tenuta nascosta, dentro appunti su cui vengono appoggiate attitudini elettroniche, in cui Coldwave e Synthwave si giocano la partita, in un pareggio splendido.

La loro indubbia capacità è quella di portare la danza in uno spazio cosciente, dove l'utilità non può essere fermata dal divertimento. Ecco, quindi, che la serietà di questo disco consta di microchip attivati per farci divenire pensieri assoldati da loro per trovare fisicità. Un miracolo, ed è bene sottolinearlo. Il cantato in francese di Jordi offre cellule di piume romantiche che non possono essere prive del bassomano sarmatico di Anton, in cui vive la disciplina e la rigidità che blocca splendidamente la musica, non consentendole troppi sentimentalismi.

Semplicemente un album doveroso e piacevole vi attende: non esitate...

 Lumiere Froide - Lumiere Froide

Toh, il Galles! Toh, Cardiff!

La capitale del Galles è una voce che non urla mai, disciplinata, discreta, vive affacciata sul fiume Taff e si fa i fatti suoi. I suoi cittadini sono elegantemente votati alla discrezione, senza privarsi di ciò che vivono gli altri cittadini del mondo. Ma per scelta e vocazione esistono senza clamori.

Così è anche per la musica.

Prendiamo i Lumiere Froide.

Misteriosi ma raffinati, immettono nel mercato discografico un Ep di quattro canzoni e rimaniamo a bocca aperta, per la somma di elementi che ci mostrano, i loro incroci verbali e sonori, le loro impronte dentro la bellezza dal cappello, il cappotto e la sciarpa grigia che proteggono la loro arte, istantanea di un luogo ancora prima che dei generi musicali proposti. Prendono la Coldwave e la rendono romantica con spasmi Post-Punk sapientemente velati.

Double Take è una nevrotica danza dall’umore Synthwave che correndo ci fa sentire un cantato tenebroso tenuto quasi a distanza.

Con Peace il ritmo cede, i primi secondi ci donano i Cure più sperimentali, ma poi velocemente si entra nel tepore della Coldwave, quella pura, capace di abbondanti dosi ipnotiche.

Slip Away è un sogno intrigante che ci consegna le nuvole su cui ascoltarla muoversi con rintocchi di Synth che stregano.

La conclusiva Intimate Blood è la più aggressiva: una spinta Electro Dark e un drumming robusto ci concedono un cantato meno presente ma sul registro basso che conquista. E poi è delirio con una tastiera che entra in un loop meraviglioso.

Lunga vita Cardiff: continua così e abbraccia per me la band!

What a surprise, Wales! Toh, Cardiff!

The capital of Wales is a voice that never shouts, disciplined, discreet, living by the River Taff and minding its own business. Its citizens are elegantly devoted to discretion, without depriving themselves of what other citizens of the world experience. But by choice and vocation they exist without clamour.

This is also the case with music.

Take the Lumiere Froide.

Mysterious but refined, they put an Ep of four songs on the record market and we are left open-mouthed by the sum of the elements they show us, their verbal and sonorous crossings, their imprints within the beauty of the hat, coat and grey scarf that protect their art, a snapshot of a place even before the musical genres proposed. They take Coldwave and romanticise it with cleverly veiled Post-Punk spasms.

Double Take is a neurotic dance with a Synthwave mood that runs through a gloomy vocal kept almost at a distance.

With Peace the rhythm gives way, the first few seconds give us the most experimental Cure, but then we quickly enter the warmth of Coldwave, pure Coldwave, capable of abundant hypnotic doses.

Slip Away is an intriguing dream that gives us the clouds on which to listen to it move with chimes of Sunth that bewitch.

The concluding Intimate Blood is the most aggressive: an Electro Dark thrust and robust drumming give us a less present but low register singing that conquers. And then it's delirium with a keyboard that enters in a wonderful loop.

Long live Cardiff: keep it up and embrace the band for me!
