 Tide Bends - Your Story

New York is bad for the skin, good for the heart, it is damaging for the central nervous system, it goes with any colour, but in the end when we talk about music there is no doubt: a lot of it comes and goes from there. And, with a few exceptions, the quality is always enormous.

Then, in front of songs like Your Story, one can only bless the melody, the voice, the music that is born as a result of it, in our enlightened chests, inside the thoughts that become multiple and our thanks fill the river of emotions that gets bigger and bigger, listen after listen. What is the magic that brings pain as you melt into an embrace with the sky?

The answer is in the three hundred and seventy-four seconds of a story that illuminates the morbidity of repeated listening, out of necessity, out of distraction, and it is mostly because of the guitar.

Tide Bends creates a mood imbalance, with this guitar texture that, starting from a marvellous shoegaze matrix, goes off the rails, slips into a psychedelic puddle in the north of the United States and takes us with it to soil us with pure, even if contaminated, beauty.

Everything becomes corrosive but with a smile that leads to abandonment: the rhythm section is perfect, and no, it is not a miracle, Dan Nolan on drums has the psychedelic school in his drumsticks and the salty rhythm of Surf Rock. Gary Zampini on bass is the sensuality of the intelligent force that doesn't press to make noise, but touches his strings gracefully creating a roar in us. Then to conclude, the trio is completed with Dave Hough, guitar and vocals, the magician, the jerk to whom much is owed: a song like this without this guitar would be a good song, not bad right? He makes it perfect, in its minimalism are revealed doses of ocean that arrive in the city of the Big Apple, as in an apocalyptic movie. But what is the song if not a film where the vision provokes upheavals of unexpected peace? There is no joy without tears...

When the guitar takes the shoegaze lanes and lets itself go, we can only surrender, because Your Story becomes our story, that of people lucky enough to be able to enjoy this flow of energy that blows away the superfluous to show us all its mastery...

But if there is a secret, it is that they are guided by an angel who suggests to them not to fossilise in artistic choices and to free the brushes of the heart to capture the mystery...

 Tide Bends - Your Story

New York fa male alla pelle, fa bene al cuore, ma è dannosa per il sistema nervoso centrale, si abbina a qualsiasi colore, ma alla fine se si parla di musica non ci sono dubbi: moltissimo passa da lì e parte da lì. E, a parte poche eccezioni, la qualità è sempre enorme.

Davanti poi a canzoni come Your Story si può solo benedire la melodia, la voce, la musica che nasce di conseguenza a questa, nel nostro petto illuminato, dentro i pensieri che si fanno multipli e i grazie riempiono il fiume di emozioni che si fa sempre più grosso, ascolto dopo ascolto. Cos'è la magia che reca dolore mentre ti sciogli in un abbraccio con il cielo?

La risposta è nei trecentosettanquattro secondi di una storia che illumina la morbosità dell'ascolto che si fa ripetuto, per necessità, per stravolgimento, ed è soprattutto per colpa della chitarra.

I Tide Bends creano un disequilibrio umorale, con questa trama di chitarra che, partendo da una matrice Shoegaze meravigliosa, esce dai binari, si infila in una pozzanghera psichedelica del nord degli Stati Uniti e ci porta con sé per sporcarci di bellezza pura anche se contaminata.

Tutto si fa corrosivo ma con un sorriso che conduce all'abbandono: la sezione ritmica è perfetta, e no, non è un miracolo, Dan Nolan alla batteria ha la scuola psichedelica nelle sue bacchette e il ritmo salato del Surf Rock. Gary Zampini al basso è la sensualità della forza intelligente che non preme per far rumore, ma sfiora le sue corde con grazia creando un boato in noi. Poi per concludere, il terzetto si completa con Dave Hough, chitarra e voce, il mago, il sussulto a cui si deve molto: un brano così senza questa chitarra sarebbe una bella canzone, non male vero? Lui la rende perfetta, nel suo minimalismo si rivelano dosi di oceano che arrivano nella città della grande mela, come in un film apocalittico. Ma cosa è la canzone se non una pellicola dove la visione provoca turbamenti di pace insperata? Non c'è gioia senza lacrime...

Quando la chitarra prende le corsie Shoegaze e si lascia andare ci si può solo arrendere, perchè Your Story diventa la nostra storia, quella di persone fortunate per il fatto di poter godere di questo flusso energetico che soffia via il superfluo per mostrarci tutta la sua maestria...

Ma se esiste un segreto è che si fanno guidare da un angelo che suggerisce loro di non fossilizzarsi in scelte artistiche e di liberare i pennelli del cuore per catturare il mistero...

Deep Cavity - Cathedral of Tears

California chewing and spewing deathrock is what moves the old scribe: it's the kind of music that makes him feel at home. Here we are in Riverside, eighty kilometres from Los Angeles. Not enough distance not to feel the fascination of that black spot that saw the birth in the late 70s of many bands willing to visit the dark atrium of the soul. The quartet produce a trio of rough songs that, starting from a Post-Punk structure, arrives very quickly in the damp cave of Deathrock to devise a way to turn tears into a solid, scratchy blanket: a way to irritate the skin with a strong guerrilla warfare, to exercise, “happily”, all the characteristics of that musical genre that has eternal life guaranteed in those parts. Danny Aranda, Alejandro Aranda, Jose Argueta and Daniel Avila are the bearers of a dying verb with the voice of the former reminding us of the Supreme Priest and only recognised God of this desecrating planet. The core of the band is the acid stings of Daniel's guitar and the contortions of Jose's bass. Alejandro Aranda drumming is pagan poetry, sensual and devastating, as his drums are the embrace on which listening bodies can throw themselves into the basement of the inner cave. Esotericism becomes cruel love and this Ep will be the refuge where deluding oneself to see the light will be a bitter smile, but the only joy granted…

La California che mastica e vomita Deathrock è quella che commuove il vecchio scriba: è il genere musicale che lo fa sentire a casa. Qui siamo a Riverside, a ottanta chilometri da Los Angeles. Distanza non sufficiente per non sentire il fascino di quella macchia nera che ha visto nascere alla fine degli anni 70 molte band propense a visitare l’atrio oscuro dell’anima. Il quartetto produce un trio di canzoni ruvide che, partendo da una struttura Post-Punk, arriva molto in fretta nella grotta umida del Deathrock per escogitare il modo per trasformare le lacrime in una coperta solida e graffiante: un irritare la pelle con una guerriglia ferrea, un esercitare, “felicemente”, tutte le caratteristiche di quel genere musicale che da quelle parti ha la vita eterna garantita. Danny Aranda, Alejandro Aranda, Jose Argueta e Daniel Avila sono i portatori di un verbo morente con la voce del primo a ricordare il Sacerdote Supremo e unico Dio riconosciuto di questo pianeta dissacrante. Il nucleo centrale della band è dato dalle punture acide della chitarra di Daniel e dalle contorsioni del basso di Jose. Il drumming di Alejandro Aranda è poesia pagana, sensuale e devastante, perché i suoi tamburi sono l’abbraccio su cui i corpi in ascolto possono buttarsi nel basamento della grotta interiore. L’esoterismo diventa amore crudele e questo Ep sarà il rifugio dove illudersi di vedere la luce sarà un sorriso amaro ma l’unica gioia concessa…

La classe, la Dea misteriosa che non pesca mai a caso, benedice chi la riceve e invita a usarla, a scrutarne l’essenza e aggiungerci del proprio per aumentarne le dimensioni.

Pedro Code non fa altro che eseguire tutto questo, portando la sua creatura IAMTHESHADOW nella zona della perfezione con l’ultimo album della band portoghese che è coraggioso, profondo, con le dodici canzoni che sono tutte baci con il rossetto nero e il binocolo che ci fa vedere da lontano i particolari dell’animo umano. Ascoltandole qualcosa nella mente si accende e si capisce che solo nel buio dell’anima si possa vedere cosa serve per davvero in questa esistenza. La crescita del gruppo è vistosa, tutto è compatto e levigato, le lacrime che cadono sono vestite di un gusto non troppo amaro: Pedro ha calibrato perfettamente i gusti e ha dato alla Darkwave il compito di essere gentile. In realtà si nuota dentro concetti che non possono essere relegati a definizioni musicali. Ovviamente esistono allacciamenti a branche di questo genere, ma è l’ultima delle cose su cui mettere l’accento.

Ciò che conquista è che non ci sono sconti: tutto è crudo e reale, ma posto con una decadenza brillante che porta ad accettare questo vento grigio che sfiora la pelle. 

Un concept sonoro perché tutto suona come una lunga traccia, un racconto sulle illusioni e i tumulti interiori con quei desideri consapevoli nei confronti di ciò che è possibile e di cosa non lo è.

In tutto questo la musica strega: sposata ai testi, diventa una montagna che abbraccia il mare in una stretta gotica ma accessibile anche a chi non ha questo genere musicale tra i preferiti. E anche questo è un miracolo che vive dentro questo disco, un riassunto perfetto del cammino compiuto negli anni, la capacità di offrire qualcosa di diverso e la certezza che Pedro sappia come istruire la progettualità del lavoro per coniugarla al talento.

Le chitarre sono accenni di raggi, mai presuntuose, mai violente, sempre delicate, con un sorriso che tende verso il basso, dove le zone di cupezza sono appese ai lati. I synth sono i pittori del progetto, ingegneri del suono e maestri di melodie semplici e quindi umane, credibili, dove è il concetto che guida le dita a creare linee che avvolgono in un ascolto caldo. Il basso, sempre potente, è un guardiano attento, viaggia dagli anni ’80 ed è esperto, sostiene le canzoni quasi con maggior forza rispetto agli altri lavori.

Quì tutto ammalia, conquista, e gli ascolti si fanno intensi e numerosi, perché avere il bisogno di ripeterli questa volta non è dato dal piacere bensì dalla necessità. Ecco: IAMTHESHADOW produce qualcosa di vero e l’applauso diventa un nuovo play…

My Review: IAMTHESHADOW - The Wide Starlight

 IAMTHESHADOW - The Wide Starlight

Class, the mysterious Goddess who never picks at random, blesses those who receive it and invites them to use it, to scrutinise its essence and add something of themselves to increase its dimensions.

Pedro Code does nothing more than accomplish all of this, taking his creature IAMTHESHADOW into the zone of perfection with the Portuguese band's latest album, which is bold, profound, with its twelve songs that are all kisses with black lipstick and binoculars that let us see the details of the human soul from afar. Listening to them, something in the mind lights up and you realise that only in the darkness of the soul  you can see what you really need in this existence. The growth of the band is noticeable, everything is compact and smooth, the tears that fall are dressed in a not too bitter taste: Pedro has calibrated the tastes perfectly and given Darkwave the task of being gentle. In reality, one swims within concepts that cannot be relegated to musical definitions. Of course there are connections to branches of this genre, but that is the least of the things to emphasise.

What conquers is that there are no discounts: everything is rough and real, but placed with a brilliant decadence that leads one to accept this grey wind that brushes against the skin. 

A sonic concept because everything sounds like one long track, a tale about illusions and inner turmoil with those conscious desires about what is possible and what is not.

In all of this, the music bewitches: married to the lyrics, it becomes a mountain that embraces the sea in a gothic grip but is also accessible to those who do not have this genre of music among their favourites. And this, too, is a miracle that lives inside this record, a perfect summary of the path taken over the years, the ability to offer something different and the certainty that Pedro knows how to instruct the work to combine it with talent.

The guitars are hints of rays, never boastful, never violent, always delicate, with a smile that tends downwards, where areas of gloom hang on the sides. The synths are the painters of the project, sound engineers and masters of simple and therefore human and believable melodies, where it is the concept that guides the fingers to create lines that wrap around a warm listening experience. The bass, always powerful, is a careful guardian, travelling from the 80s and experienced, supporting the songs almost more strongly than in other works.

Here, everything charms, seduces and our listening becomes intense and numerous, because the need to repeat it this time is not from pleasure but from necessity. Here: IAMTHESHADOW produces something real and the applause turns into a new play...

La mia Recensione: Dead Myth - Shores

Dead Myth - Shores

Tre normanni di istanza a Parigi, artefici di una canzone meravigliosa come Love Awakts, dall’Ep #1, arriva all’Lp Shores con dosi massicce di garage psichedelico, noise e spiragli di luce Shoegaze per un risultato che gratta e graffia il cuore con devastanti incursioni piene di acidi e sparatorie sonore, un incubo che conosce e si appropria di trame melodiche in frenetiche agitazioni motorie. A tratti si evidenziano fascinazioni  Rockabilly che ispessiscono i territori delle loro scorribande. Come dei  New Model Army dall’accento francese, con legami evidenti con una ricerca sonora che guarda alla Germania e che ridefinisce la spettacolare nuova stagione alternativa Francese, questo disco è un miracolo vista la fatica che molte band compiono nell’agglomerare stili musicali e periodi diversi. Loro ci riescono benissimo diventando una eccellenza, una novità da cui apprendere. Il rumore qui è una donna spavalda, elegante ma sempre potente nel creare gittate di fango, dove sporcarsi è un privilegio. Fate posto all’intelligenza: ascoltate questo album e la stagione del tumulto splenderà dentro il vostro stupore…
